Rebels Drop Final Game Against Florida

3/9/2008 | Softball

GAINESVILLE, Fla. The Ole Miss Rebels (13-8, 0-3 SEC) dropped a hard-fought game, 5-2, to the No. 5 Florida Gators (27-1, 3-0 SEC) in the final game of the conference-opening series on Sunday at Katie Seashole Pressly Staduim.

Ole Miss jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth on an Amber Tramp double to center that scored Lauren Grill, who had doubled to right earlier in the inning.

Eight different Rebels pounded out hits in the contest, with Grill knocking her fifth double of the season and Tramp collecting her fourth double of the year.

“The girls played hard and fought for the whole game,” said Ole Miss head coach Missy Dickerson. “Now we have to go home and take care of business.”

The Gators loaded the bases with one out in the second on an error, a hit by pitch and a single. Florida second baseman Aja Paculba singled to center to give Florida a 2-0 lead.

Florida would add two more runs in the fourth inning on three walks and two singles. Gator OF Mary Ratliff walked with the bases loaded to drive in the first run and Ali Gardiner had an RBI sac fly to score the second run of the inning.

The Rebels would fight back and another run in the sixth. Lisa Conchos walked to start the inning and was followed by Ashley Dowdy, who also walked with one out. Lauren Rowe singled with two down to load the bases and Morgan Button singled back up the middle to score one run.

Ole Miss threatened in the seventh when Alise Doubt reached base on a swinging bunt with one out. She advanced to third on a single down the first base line by Lisa Conchos to give the Rebels runners on the corners. However, Lauren Grill grounded sharply into a double play to end the game.

Tara Willitt (5-4) started the game for the Rebels and suffered the loss. She pitched 3.0 inning and allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits. Becky Nye entered in the fourth and pitched the final 3.0 innings. She allowed one earned run on two hits and struck out one.

Stacey Nelson (16-1) pitched a complete-game for the Gators. She gave up eight hits and two runs in 7.0 innings of work. She walked three batters and struck out five.

Ole Miss will return to Oxford to host South Alabama at the Ole Miss Softball Complex on Tuesday at 3 p.m. before traveling to face Southern Miss in Hattiesburg on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
