Sixth-Ranked Rebels Picked Second In SEC West By Coaches

2/16/2009 | Baseball

OXFORD, Miss. The Ole Miss baseball team was picked to finish second in the Southeastern Conference Western Division and received a vote to claim the overall SEC title in a preseason poll of league coaches, the conference office announced Monday.

Ole Miss received two first place votes for the Western Division and garnered 54 points, while LSU was picked to win the overall title and the Western Division. Both the Rebels and Tigers found themselves in the picture for the overall title along with Georgia who was picked to win the Eastern Division.

Ole Miss is coming off a sixth-straight NCAA Tournament berth as the Rebels advanced to the Championship game of the NCAA Coral Gables Regional in 2008 before falling to top-ranked and hosting Miami. With the appearance in the Regional Championship game, the Rebels became one of only six schools in the nation to have advanced to a Regional Championship each of the last four seasons.

The Rebels posted a 39-26 record in 2008 and advanced to the Championship game of the SEC Tournament for the second time in three seasons.

Returning for the Rebels this season is a bevy of players, including three who were drafted in the 2008 MLB Draft but opted to return to Ole Miss for their senior season. Among those returning are right-handed pitcher Scott Bittle, catcher Brett Basham and outfielder Logan Power. Bittle is a preseason All-America selection and candidate for the Brooks Wallace Award, while Basham was the top defensive catcher in the SEC last season and Power is the top returning hitter on the team.

The Rebels open this season on Friday, February 20, at the Coca Cola Classic at the University of South Alabama. Ole Miss will face Liberty at 1 p.m. The Rebels will also face-off against Mercer and South Alabama on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
