Ole Miss Drops Two On Opening Day

TEMPE, Ariz. - Senior Amber Tramp knocked in a career-high five runs, but it wasn't enough as Ole Miss dropped the season-opening game 21-16 to Western Michigan on Thursday at the Kajikawa Classic hosted by Arizona State. The Rebels also fell in the night cap 13-0 to the No. 5 Sun Devils.

The Rebels jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the first against Western Michigan after Tramp smashed a two-run double to right center that scored Corrine Doornberg and Lauren Grill with one out in the frame. First baseman Aly Presswood added an RBI groundout before third baseman Cali Overbeck slapped a two-run double off the top of the center field wall that gave Ole Miss a 5-0 lead.

Western Michigan answered back in the bottom of the first with four runs on just one hit, but was aided by four Ole Miss walks and a Rebel error. Starting pitcher Brittany Barnhill issued a walk to start the game and a fielding error and another walk loaded the bases for the Broncos. Barnhill then issued two more walks around a pop out to score two more runs for Western Michigan. Barnhill was then relived by Lindsey Perry, who struck out a batter before allowing a two-run single to first baseman Molly Lange.

Ole Miss came right back in the top of the second with three more runs highlighted by an RBI single to right by Tramp.

Bronco second baseman Michelle Bendewald knocked a two-run double in the second to highlight a four-run inning to tie the game at eight.

Grill and right fielder Amanda Hutcheson each added an RBI in the third to give the Rebels a three-run lead. The Rebels added four more runs in the fourth aided by another two-run double by Tramp.

Tramp finished the game 3-or-3 at the plate with a career-best five RBI and three runs scored. Grill went was 4-for-4 with four runs scored and two RBI, while Doornberg added three hits and four runs scored.

Western Michigan exploded for 11 runs in the sixth to take a 21-16 lead. Bendewald led the Bronco charge in the inning first smashing a three-run double before knocking a three-run homer later in the inning.

Becky Nye suffered the loss after allowing eight runs on five hits in all in the sixth frame. Meghan Thomas picked up the win for Western Michigan after pitching 5.0 innings and allowing five runs on nine hits.

Game Two

Sun Devil shortstop Katelyn Boyd smashed two home runs and drove in four runs as No. 5 Arizona State knocked off Ole Miss 13-0 in the second game of the day at the Kajikawa Classic.

Arizona State jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the first on a two-run homer by Boyd. The Sun Devils extended the lead to 8-0 in the second on a solo homer from right fielder Annie Lockwood and a grand slam by catcher Kaylyn Castillo.

The Sun Devils added another five runs in the fourth highlighted by another two-run homer from Boyd.

Becky Nye suffered the loss after giving up four runs in 1.0 inning of work. Hillary Bach picked up the win for Arizona State after giving up two hits in 3.1 innings.

Brittany Barnhill and Amanda Hutcheson both picked up singles for Ole Miss

The Rebels will continue play at the Kajikawa Classic on Friday when they face off against Oregon State and Ohio beginning at 10:30 a.m.
