Rebels Down Mississippi State 4-2

5/1/2010 | Baseball

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Brett Huber picked up his sixth save of the season as he struck out five batters and allowed only two hits in 2.0 innings of work to help lead No. 14 Ole Miss (31-13, 12-7 SEC) to a 4-2 win over Mississippi State (20-21, 5-14 SEC) on Friday night.

Starter Drew Pomeranz worked 6.1 innings and allowed one run on five hits with 11 strikeouts and a walk, but took no decision as he left the game with the score tied at one in the seventh. Matt Tracy (3-2) picked up the win in relief as he worked 0.2 innings and allowed one run on one hit with a walk and a strikeout.

Mississippi State starter Tyler Whitney (0-2) suffered the loss as he gave up four runs - one earned - on seven hits with three walks and eight strikeouts.

"It was all about the pitching tonight," said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. "Drew found his rhythm and really took control of things until he got tired. Matt Tracy did a good job coming in to relieve him and Brett Huber did a really good job of holding them off at the end, striking out batters for five of the last six outs in the game."

Ole Miss loaded the bases in the first, using a walk and back-to-back singles to put three men on, but couldn't get a run home as the next three batters were all retired to end the inning.

Mississippi State struck first when Nick Vickerson scored on a double play grounder to second from Connor Powers. Vickerson reached on a walk before taking third on a single to right from Luke Adkins to get into position for the Powers groundout. Pomeranz then struck out Cody Freeman to end the inning with the Bulldogs holding a 1-0 lead.

Taylor Hashman tied things up for the Rebels in the fourth with a solo shot down the left field line to even the score at one.

A hit batter with one out in the seventh sent Ole Miss to the bullpen for Matt Tracy as Mississippi State put together the beginnings of a rally. An infield single to the first batter faced by Tracy put two men on, but Tracy got a strikeout and a groundout to end the inning with no damage.

Ole Miss then put together a big inning in the eighth, using a walk and two fielding errors to load the bases with no outs. Mississippi State went to its bullpen for Caleb Reed, who walked the only batter faced to score pinch runner Jordan King and give the Rebels the lead. Ole Miss added to the lead with an infield single from Miles Hamblin that scored Zach Miller and a sac fly from Tim Ferguson to score Alex Yarbrough as the Rebels took a 4-1 lead.

Mississippi State wasn't done, though, putting together an answering rally in the bottom of the frame. A leadoff walk got things started for the Bulldogs and Ole Miss turned to its bullpen again, this time for Brett Huber. Huber got a pair of outs before a wild pitch and a throwing error on the attempt to throw out the runner put Adkins at third. Cody Freeman then doubled to left to score Adkins and cut the lead to 4-2 before Huber would strike out Ryan Collins to end the inning.

After a lead-off single in the ninth, Huber then struck out the next three batters to end the inning and save the game for the Rebels.

Ole Miss and Mississippi State will play the second game of the series at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday in a game televised by SportSouth from Dudy Noble Field.
