Bianco Notches 500th Win As Rebels Down Arkansas State

5/13/2010 | Baseball

JONESBORO, Ark. - Mike Bianco picked up his 500th career win as a head coach - his 400th at the helm of the Rebel program - on Wednesday night as No. 14 Ole Miss (35-15) defeated Arkansas State (26-22) by a score of 5-2.

The win closed out the non-conference schedule for the Rebels as Ole Miss went 20-6 outside of league play this season.

Rory McKean (4-1) picked up the win as he worked 5.0 scoreless innings and held the Red Wolves to four hits while striking out one and walking four on the night. Brett Huber picked up his ninth save of the season as he worked the ninth and held Arkansas State off the board.

Brandon Milhouse (0-1) suffered the loss as he allowed three runs on three hits with two walks in 2.0 innings of work as he made his second start of the season.

Taylor Hashman helped pace the Rebels from the leadoff spot with a 2-for-5 performance and two RBI, while Alex Yarbrough hit his third home run of the season in the fourth inning and finished one assist shy of tying the school record with eight assists on the night.

"We played well tonight on an evening when it was a tough night to score runs," Bianco said. "The guys competed great out there and came up with some big at bats and big hits with runners in scoring position.

"Rory McKean really pitched great and gutted it tonight. It was a clutch performance from Callender to come in the game with a jam with the bases loaded and get out of the inning."

Ole Miss got on the board in the first inning when Taylor Hashman scored on a sac fly to the wall in left field from Tim Ferguson. Hashman doubled to left to open the game and took third on a sac bunt from Kevin Mort before scoring on the Ferguson fly out to give Ole Miss the 1-0 lead.

The Rebels added two more runs in the second when Hashman came up with a two-RBI triple off the wall in right field that scored Taylor Hightower and Mike Snyder. Hightower drew a walk and moved to second on a single to left from Snyder before both runners scored on the hit from Hashman.

Alex Yarbrough hit a solo home run to open the fourth inning as the Rebels took a 4-0 lead on the hosting Red Wolves.

The Rebels continued to build on the lead in the sixth inning when a fifth run crossed the plate on a single to right field from Miles Hamblin. With runners on first and second, Hamblin ripped a line drive to right that scored Yarbrough from second and put Ole Miss on top 5-0.

Arkansas State got on the board in the seventh, taking advantage of a throwing error to put a man in scoring position with one out. Zach Maggio walked before a grounder back to the mound from Michael Faulkner allowed Faulkner to reach on a fielder's choice as Matt Tracy threw to second to get the lead runner. The throw was off the mark, though, allowing Maggio to advance safely and take third as the ball rolled into centerfield. A single to left from Todd Baumgartner drove in Maggio and broke up the shutout.

A single from Murray Watts then loaded the bases with one out as Giovanni Garcia came to the plate and the Rebels turned to the bullpen for Eric Callender. A second run crossed the plate on a wild play as Garcia popped up and the ball bounced off Miles Hamblin at first, glanced off a running Alex Yarbrough and into the hands of Matt Smith for a pop out. Faulkner then scored from second as the umpires determined that he had tagged up on the play and Arkansas State cut the lead to 5-2.

Callender then got a fly out to end the inning with the Rebels holding the three run lead.

Brett Huber then came in and worked the ninth to get the Rebels the win as he held the Red Wolves off the board for his ninth save of the season.

Ole Miss will return to action on Friday night when the Rebels take on the Alabama Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The first game of the three-game series will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.
