Hashman Home Run Powers Rebels Past No. 13 Auburn
5/28/2010 | Baseball
HOOVER, Ala. - Taylor Hashman hit a three-run shot in the 10th inning to power No. 21 Ole Miss (38-21) to a 10-7 win over No. 13 Auburn (40-19) in an elimination game at the Southeastern Conference Tournament on Friday night as the Rebels continue to advance.
With two outs and men at the corners in the 10th, Hashman took a 0-1 pitch over the wall in straight-away center to give the Rebels a three-run lead in the back-and-forth game. Freshman Brett Huber then picked up his 12th save of the season with a walk and two strikeouts while holding Auburn hitless in the 10th.
Huber needs one more save to tie the single-season record at Ole Miss set by Stephen Head in 2003.
"It was a great college baseball game," said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. "It had a little bit of everything - some great pitching at points, some great offense and some miscues in the field by both teams. I'm really proud of our guys with a gutsy performance with our backs against the wall. We probably needed the win more emotionally to get back on track."
Ole Miss got on the board in the second inning when Tim Ferguson came up with a bases loaded single through the right side that scored Alex Yarbrough and Kevin Mort. Yarbrough doubled to open the inning before Mort singled to short to put two men on base. Miles Hamblin then drew a walk to load the bases for the Ferguson hit that put the Rebels up 2-0.
Auburn responded in the bottom of the frame when Creede Simpson doubled to right field with two outs, driving in Ryan Jenkins from first. A fielding error on the play in right field allowed Simpson to move to third with two outs, but Goforth got the final out with a strikeout looking on a full count to leave the Rebels with a 2-1 lead after two.
The Rebels pushed the lead back out to two runs in the third when Mike Snyder singled through the right side, driving in Hashman from first. Hashman was hit by a pitch to reach base before Snyder came up with the two-out hit to put Ole Miss back up 3-1.
Auburn tied things up with one swing in the bottom of the inning when Tony Caldwell hit a two-run shot to left field that scored Justin Fradejas. Fradejas singled to open the inning before scoring on the Caldwell hit that evened things at three. The Tigers then used a single, a hit batter and a walk on four pitches to load the bases and send Ole Miss to the bullpen for Matt Crouse. The left-hander then struck out the next two batters to get the Rebels out of the inning tied at three.
A wild pitch with two outs allowed the Rebels to reclaim the lead as Ferguson crossed the plate on the play. Ferguson singled to open the inning and advanced to second on a steal attempt, but the second baseman failed to hold onto the ball allowing him to reach safely on the error. Ferguson then moved to third on a groundout to short from Smith before scoring on the wild pitch that gave Ole Miss the 4-3 advantage.
Auburn responded in the bottom of the fifth when Tony Caldwell singled to right field but took off and advanced to third as a throwing error by the right fielder was well off the mark and went to the backstop. Two batters later, Justin Bryant flew out to right to drive in Caldwell and tie the game at four.
The Rebels broke things open in the seventh inning, capitalizing on three Auburn errors and using a pair of hits to push three more runs across the plate and take a 7-4 lead on the Tigers. It started with a fielding error in left on a fly ball from Hashman and continued when a throwing error to third on a single from Alex Yarbrough allowed Hashman to score from first and Yarbrough to move to third.
A fielding error at second allowed Yarbrough to score and David Phillips to reach safely before Tanner Mathis entered the game to run for Phillips. Mathis took second on a wild pitch and then scored on a single through the right side from Miles Hamblin to give the Rebels the three-run lead.
The Tigers weren't done, answering in the bottom of the frame as Dan Gamache drew a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. A single to left put runners at the corners for Hunter Morris, who then hit a three-run shot to right field to tie the game at seven as the Rebels turned to reliever Trent Rothlin.
Hashman hit a three-run shot in the 10th inning to put the Rebels up 10-7 with two outs. Zach Miller drew a walk before moving to third on a single to right from Snyder to put two men on before Hashman came up with the hit to center field.
Huber then held the Tigers off the board in the bottom of the inning to get the Rebels the win and propel the team into Saturday's matchup with LSU at 9:30 a.m.
