PONTE VEDRA, Fla. - Senior Ole Miss golfer Jonathan Randolph and junior Joe David are in contention for medalist honors at the John Hayt Collegiate, as both climbed the leaderboard Monday to get within three at the Sawgrass Country Club.
Randolph, who began the day tied for 33, fired the low round of the day, a 3-under 69, to jump to a tie for fourth at 2-under for the tournament. He had six birdies on the day. At one point the All-American got to 5-under before a double bogey, bogey on his 14th and 15th holes. He birdied No. 9 (his 18th) to get back to 3-under.
David started the second round tied for 12th with Sunday's opening round 70. He finished at even par for the second round and moved up to a tie for fourth at 2-under. David shot even par with an eagle and six birdies. Unfortunately, he carded two double bogeys.
In much tougher conditions, the team struggled as a whole, finishing with a 300 to land in eighth heading into the final round. Junior college transfer Zach Primavera turned in a 77, junior Billy Brozovich had an 82 and sophomore Chad Bounds finished with an 84.
"One could tell by the scores that conditions were tough. We had 25-35 mph winds today," Ross said. "Jonathan, even though he had a double bogey in his round, still had the low round of the day. In conditions like this, our most experienced players handled it best. I am proud of Jonathan and Joe - they each have a chance to win."
Randolph, who won three times last year, put himself in contention to win the first tournament (Gator Invitational) of the spring just two weeks ago. David is still searching for his first collegiate win, but is certainly capable of going low in the final round. Last year, he fired a 63 in the final round of the SEC Championship to pace the Rebels to second place.
Auburn leads the team standings with a 577. Arkansas, LSU and Tennessee are tied for second at 584. Central Florida and TCU are tied for fifth at 586. Randolph and David are three back of Auburn's Blayne Barber, Arkansas' Sebastien Cappelen and Florida's Phillip Choi, all at 5-under.
