OXFORD, Miss. - Freshman right-hander Bobby Wahl was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week following the Rebels' sweep of conference foe Kentucky, the league office announced on Monday.
Wahl earned the honor after helping the Rebels post a series sweep over the Kentucky Wildcats this past weekend, a sweep that moved the Ole Miss squad into a tie atop the SEC Western Division at the halfway point of conference play.
The freshman right-hander picked up two saves in two appearances against the Wildcats, allowing the Rebels to grab the series win and setting up the sweep opportunity that Ole Miss completed with a 6-5 win on Sunday.
It was the only sweep in conference play this past weekend.
Wahl worked the ninth inning of both Friday and Saturday's games against the Wildcats, preserving the win in both games. Wahl got a flyout with the bases loaded in the ninth inning of Friday's game to give the Rebels the win and end a Wildcat rally before keeping Kentucky off the board in the ninth inning of Saturday's 12-10 win.
Wahl also worked 2.1 scoreless innings against No. 20 Southern Miss on Tuesday night at Trustmark Park, entering the game with a man in scoring position in the eighth. He held the Golden Eagles off the board and allowed Ole Miss to tie the game in the ninth to send the game into extra-innings.
Wahl and the Rebels will return to action on Tuesday night at Trustmark Park when Ole Miss will face Mississippi State in the annual Governor's Cup Game. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. and will be televised by CSS.
