Rebel Women Start the Day in Cardinal 6K Race at 10 a.m. CT
MADISON, Wis. – Ole Miss men's and women's cross country will face its toughest test of the season thus far against 18 total ranked schools at the Pre-National Invitational, hosted by the University of Wisconsin this Saturday.
The Pre-National meet offers a preview of the NCAA Championship course each season, and it routinely features the top teams in the nation looking for a final glimpse at the championship site. Six total races will be run, with the Rebel men and women both being featured in the seeded Cardinal races against several of the best teams in the nation.
The No. 18 Rebel women are one of 10 ranked schools in the women's Cardinal 6K race, which will kick things off at 10 a.m. CT on Saturday. Ole Miss will square off against fellow top-30 teams in No. 1 Colorado, No. 4 Oregon, No. 7 Arkansas, No. 9 BYU, No. 11 Indiana, No. 13 NC State, No. 21 Minnesota, No. 23 Portland and No. 25 Florida State.
Going up against ranked competition is no new challenge for the Rebel women, though, as Ole Miss came out victorious against four ranked schools back on Sept. 21 at the Battle in Beantown. Ole Miss, which was not receiving a single vote in the USTFCCCA National Coaches Poll that week, took down No. 24 Minnesota, No. 27 Dartmouth, No. 22 Syracuse and No. 11 Providence thanks to a spectacular showing that included seven Rebel women in the top-40 finishers – led by redshirt freshman Lisa Vogelgesang in 10th place.
Vogelgesang is one of 10 Rebels in action for the women's squad this weekend alongside Chelsea Drum, Anna Elkin, Courtney Hopkins, Maddie King, Emma McClellan, Maddie McHugh, Clio Ozanne-Jaques, Nicole Rice and Victoria Simmons.
The No. 22 Ole Miss men, meanwhile, will run in the seeded Cardinal 8K race an hour later at 11:30 a.m. CT. The Rebels will face a similarly talented field against two-time defending national champions, No. 1 Northern Arizona, No. 3 Wisconsin, No. 5 Stanford, No. 9 Colorado State, No. 11 Colorado, No. 13 Oregon, No. 15 Southern Utah, No. 20 Michigan and No. 26 NC State.
The Rebel men put together a strong outing in Boston as well, taking third behind No. 10 Syracuse and No. 26 Washington while beating out No. 17 Virginia and No. 12 Campbell. The breakout story from that race, however, was the emergence of junior Farah Abdulkarim at the top of the Rebel pack. Abdulkarim opened some eyes in the cross country world with an excellent fourth-place finish, followed by Waleed Suliman in 10th and Mark Robertson in 14th.
All three will run for Ole Miss this weekend alongside teammates Cade Bethmann, Michael Coccia, Mario Garcia Romo, Dalton Hengst, Ben Savino, Everett Smulders and Robinson Snider.
Fans can watch the action live on FloTrack (subscription needed) beginning with the women's Cardinal 6K at 10 a.m. CT on Saturday.
