TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Tickets to the NCAA Championships are on the line as both the Ole Miss men's and women's cross country teams look to book return trips to the national meet at the NCAA South Regional this Friday morning at Florida State's Apalachee Regional Park.
The key prize for teams running in the nine NCAA Regional meets across the United States this Friday will be the top-two automatic qualifier spots to the national championship, which this year will be hosted at the University of Wisconsin. The next four individual finishers not attached to either of those two qualifying teams also earn trips to the national meet as an individual runner.
An additional 13 at-large teams and a variable number of additional individuals are chosen through a national selection process within a day following each regional meet. The top-25 finishers at each regional earn All-Region honors.
Ole Miss is looking to make it three straight years of qualifying both its men's and women's teams to the national meet, but the road to Madison won't be smooth for the Rebels in a tough South Region.
The No. 17 Rebel men will be looking for their fifth-straight trip to the NCAA Championships, and after a historic win at the SEC Championships two weeks ago, Ole Miss will enter as the men's favorite heading into the 10K race as the top-rated team in the South Region ahead of No. 30 Tennessee.
The Rebels have earned an automatic spot in each of the previous four seasons, winning two South Region titles in 2014 and 2016 – the latter of which led to the magical fourth-place podium finish at the NCAA Championships that year in Terre Haute.
Ole Miss will sport much of the same roster that helped bring home the first SEC title in Rebel track and cross country history on Oct. 26 in Auburn. Included are First-Team All-SEC finishers Waleed Suliman (2017 NCAA All-South Region), Cade Bethmann (also the SEC Freshman of the Year) and Mario Garcia Romo, and Second-Team members Farah Abdulkarim and Mark Robertson. Also running for the Rebels are Dalton Hengst, Ben Savino and Everett Smulders.
The No. 23 Rebel women, meanwhile, look to defend their 2017 South Region title in one of the toughest regional matchups nationally with five teams all well within range of snagging either of the auto bids or one of the national at-large slots. Ole Miss ranks second in the South Region standings entering Friday behind No. 21 Florida, but ahead of other contenders Florida State, No. 29 Georgia and No. 30 Georgia Tech.
Much like the men, the Rebel women are in the midst of a historic stretch over the last few seasons. Just two weeks ago, Ole Miss finished third after a strong performance at the SEC Championships, the third-straight top-three team finish for the Rebel women – the best-such streak in school history after never finishing in the top-three prior to 2016.
That success has carried over to the regional and national stage, as the Rebel women have punched their first two tickets to the NCAA Championships in program history in 2016 and 2017, posting top-25 national team finishes along the way in both years. Ole Miss is one of just eight programs nationwide to have its men's and women's programs finish within the top-25 in each of the last two seasons, joining national powerhouses Arkansas, BYU, Colorado, Michigan State, NC State, Oregon and Stanford.
Leading the way for the Rebel women will be sophomore Clio Ozanne-Jaques, who earned All-Region honors at this meet last year with a 17th-place finish. Ozanne-Jaques was also the top Rebel finisher at the SEC Championships, earning Second-Team All-SEC for her 12th-place finish.
Joining her on the course Friday morning will be Anna Elkin, Courtney Hopkins, Maddie King, Maddie McHugh, Victoria Simmons, Ylvi Traxler and Lisa Vogelgesang – who earned SEC All-Freshman honors this year.
Competition will begin with the women's 6K at 7:30 a.m. CT.
