Ole Miss Beat Out Six Nationally Ranked Schools Across Women’s and Men’s Competition
BOSTON – Ole Miss cross country combined for a stellar showing at Boston College's Battle in Beantown on Friday afternoon, with the Rebel women knocking off all four ranked teams in competition for the meet title and the Rebel men taking third in a stacked field.
Even with All-Region runners Anna Braswell and Clio Ozanne-Jaques sitting out, the Rebel women -- who received zero votes in the last two national coaches polls by the USTFCCCA – took down four ranked teams en route to a 102-105 victory over Georgia Tech.
"I was very pleased with how our women performed," said Associate Head Cross Country Coach Ryan Vanhoy. "They ran well together and executed our race plan well enough to get the victory over a competitive field."
Redshirt freshman Lisa Vogelgesang (10th, 17:33.5) and sophomore Maddie King (11th, 17:34.0) led the way for the Rebel women, helping Ole Miss topple Georgia Tech (second, 105), Utah (third, 161), No. 24 Minnesota (fourth, 162) and No. 27 Dartmouth (fifth, 168). The Rebel women also beat out No. 22 Syracuse (ninth, 242) and No. 11 Providence (11th, 257).
This was the first-career cross country race for Vogelgesang, who last outdoor season won an SEC silver medal in the 3000-meter steeplechase as a freshman, and she also competed for her native Germany in the IAAF World U20 Championships over the summer.
In addition to Vogelgesang and King, five more Rebel women finished in the top-40. Ylvi Traxler – fresh off a win at the SEC Preview and SEC Women's Runner of the Week honors – finished 23rd at 17:48.9, followed by Victoria Simmons (25th, 17:50.3), Maddie McHugh (33rd, 17:54.2), Nicole Rice (35th, 17:56.1) and Courtney Hopkins (39th, 17:59.8).
The No. 30 Rebel men, meanwhile, took third place in a competitive race that featured five nationally-ranked squads – including Ole Miss. The Rebels scored 77 points behind No. 10 Syracuse (37) and No. 26 Washington (70), while also beating out No. 17 Virginia (fourth, 98), North Carolina (fifth, 153) and No. 12 Campbell (sixth, 189) in the process.
"The men had a solid showing, but were perhaps a bit too impatient in the early stages of the race, which cost us a bit over the last two kilometers," Vanhoy said. "It was a good learning experience for our younger guys, and I know we will continue to improve over the course of the season. All things considered, this was a good starting point for our men's team."
Farah Abdulkarim paved the way, leading five scorers within the top-28 and taking fourth overall in the 8K at 24:08.5. Sophomore and All-Region runner Waleed Suliman opened his 2018 season with a top-10 finish in 10th at 24:17.5. Other Rebel scorers included senior Mark Robertson in his 2018 debut (14th, 24:28.2), Michael Coccia (21st, 24:37.0) and Mario Garcia Romo (28th, 24:50.9).
Ole Miss will take the next two weeks off before returning to action on Saturday, Oct. 13 for the Pre-National Invitational at the University of Wisconsin – the final meet before the SEC Championships at Auburn on Oct. 26.
"We held out two of our projected top seven for precautionary reasons this week, so it was exciting to see the rest of the team really step up in their absence," Vanhoy said. "We look forward to getting up to full strength heading into the championship portion of the season."
