Rebels Upset No. 22 Missouri in 12th-Straight Win

Ole Miss Improves to 4-0 in the League, a Program First
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Behind a large contingency of Ole Miss red and navy, the Rebel volleyball squad pulled off a thrilling upset, downing No. 22 Missouri 3-1 (18-25, 25-20, 25-22, 29-27) at the Hearnes Center on Wednesday evening.
Ole Miss (12-3, 4-0) picked up its 12th-straight victory, the longest active streak in the conference, and moves to 4-0 in SEC contests, a program first. It was the first ranked win since 2010 (No. 12 LSU, 3-0) and also the first win ever for the Rebels in Columbia.
Senior Emily Stroup led the way with 18 kills, aided by freshman Anna Bair's 12. Fellow veterans Leah Mulkey and Nayo Warnell provided critical plays down the stretch, finishing the match with five and six kills each, respectively. Stroup turned in a strong .289 hitting percentage.
Junior Lauren Bars dished out 40 assists, and the squad finished with 14 total blocks, after not tallying any in the first frame, led by sophomore Aubrey Sultemeier's five. Senior Nicole Purcell, the league's leader in digs, registered a team-high 17.
Missouri went on a 4-0 run early, snapped by a Warnell stab over the net and followed by two Mizzou miscues, and kills from Stroup and Mulkey. The squad came within one, and continued to pressure as the Tigers used three separate pairs of points to remain in control. The Tigers secured the final three points to open up with a one-set advantage at 25-18.
It was cat-and-mouse in the second frame, as the two squads saw 10 total ties and seven lead changes. After Missouri opened with four of the first five points, the Rebels began to pick at the lead, using a three-point rally courtesy of a Tiger error, Stroup kill, and Bars block to even things and take the lead.
The Tigers then used the exact same process, followed by yet another 3-0 run from the Rebs as the back-and-forth continued. Missouri led as late as 17-16 before Ole Miss ignited for a 7-1 run, including four Mizzou miscues, to add some much needed cushion at 23-18. The Tigers threatened with a pair of points to come within three, before a kill from Sultemeier and an ace from Bars sealed the set at 25-20 and evened the match.
The momentum carried into Set 3, as Ole Miss opened with a 6-1 rally to go up 8-4, and then increased their lead on another big run, taking seven of nine points to go up 15-7. Missouri responded with a threat, taking six of the next seven points, including a 4-0 rally, to narrow the gap to just three points at 16-13.
The Tigers continued to pressure, but Ole Miss remained in control, riding a three-to-four-point cushion up to set point at 24-20. Missouri recorded a kill and a block to give the Rebels another scare at 24-22, but Ole Miss prevailed via a service error to take a 2-1 match lead at 25-22.
The Rebels held a four-point advantage through the early stages of the fourth frame, leading by marks of 10-6, 12-8, 14-10, and 18-14. The Tigers continued with their theme of the match, clawing their way back. The squad used four consecutive points to even things at 18 all, and then took control of the match at 20-19 on a kill from league-leader Kylie Deberg.
That's when Rebel fans got to the edge of their seat, as Ole Miss ignited for four straight points on kills from Mulkey and Bair and a block from Warnell. Up 24-21 and holding the Tigers to match point, Missouri pushed, tallying three straight points to even things at 24.
A commanding kill from Warnell put Ole Miss back at match point, only to be foiled once again after a block and kill from the Tigers reversed the roles with Mizzou up 26-25. Another kill from Warnell evened things once again, but Missouri continued to fight, going back at set point at 27-26.
The Rebels refused to quit, pulling off the upset on a kill from Stroup, a service ace from sophomore Lauren Thompson, her second of the match, and the final decisive kill from Mulkey.
