Sophomore put together two under par rounds to claim first title

HOUSTON – Heavy rains forced the cancellation of the final round at the All-American Intercollegiate Tuesday. The second-round results become final, keeping Ole Miss in sixth as a team, and Cecil Wegener taking home the individual title.

"This win is a huge momentum builder for me going into the spring season and it could not feel better," said Wegener. "Momentum is very important in golf and I am very excited to capitalize on it going forward and help my team be the best it can be."

The sophomore put together two under par rounds to come home with his first medal at Ole Miss. Wegener led the team in birdies with eight overall, including four in a five-hole stretch Monday on his way to finishing in red figures.

"I'm very proud of Cecil," said head coach Chris Malloy. "He has fought very hard to put himself in this position and to see it pay off for him and breakthrough for the victory is great. As he gets better mentally and is easier on himself, he's going to be very tough to beat."

The Rebels were poised for the final push today, as they have been statistically been a better scoring team during the final round.

"We are certainly disappointed to not have a chance to make a run at the lead today," said Malloy. "However, that's golf and we need to learn to do a better job out of the gates and put ourselves into a better position."

"It teaches us the importance of every single shot. I was very pleased with what I saw out of our younger guys this week. Certainly, Cecil played great, but our freshmen got better as well. We will build on this and be prepared as we head into a tough stretch of golf with plenty of great opportunities ahead of us."

The Rebels return to the course Sunday, February 24th, for the USF – Ole Miss Challenge in Clearwater Beach, Florida.
