Rebels Will Compete Against 14 Ranked Teams at Auburn
AUBURN, Ala. – This weekend, the No. 41 Ole Miss women's golf team takes on what will rate as one of the toughest events in all of collegiate golf this season, the Evans Derby Experience at Auburn beginning on Saturday.
The three-day, 54-hole event will take place at the Saugahatchee Country Club, which will be playing 6,250 and par 72.
The tournament field consists of 14 ranked teams, all in the Golfstat Top-50 national rankings, highlighted by No. 2 Duke, No. 3 Texas and seven SEC teams, including head coach Kory Henkes' alma mater, No. 9 South Carolina.
Henkes is bring five Rebels to Auburn to compete. Julia Johnson will be in the No. 1 position, followed by Ellen Hutchinson-Kay, Conner Beth Ball, Kennedy Swann and Macy Somoskey. Kie Purdom and Pi-Lillebi Hermansson will be competing as individuals.
"It's always great to play against the best teams in the country," Henkes said. "In order to be the best, you have to play side-by-side with great players who continually push you week in and week out. We have a lot of momentum from our great showing in The Dominican and we look forward to playing with our SEC counterparts this weekend."
Julia Johnson is coming off a top-5 finish in the Dominican Republic where she went par or under all three rounds. The sophomore continues to lead the Rebels in almost all major categories including scoring average (72.9) and top-10 finishes (4).
Ellen Hutchinson-Kay became the first Rebel to earn an SEC accolade this spring after being named SEC Freshman of the Week on Wednesday after her top-15 performance at the Tar Heel Classic. The freshman leads the team in total birdies with 51 and has been in the top-three of the starting five in every event this year.
Conner Beth Ball joins Johnson and Hutchinson-Kay in the top-three of the lineup for the sixth time this season and has four top-20 finishes during her sophomore campaign, the last coming this past week at the Tar Heel Classic.
Rounding out the starting five for Ole Miss are Kennedy Swann and Macy Somoskey, who both made their Rebel debuts in the lineup last week, each finishing in the top-40 individually.
Kie Purdom and Pi-Lillebi Hermansson are each making their first appearance since the Bruin Wave Invitational in late February.
First round begins Saturday morning with an 8 a.m. CT shotgun start. Live scoring will be available through Golfstat.com.
