Briggs, Wegener Pace Rebels With 1-over 73’s in Final Round
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Ole Miss men's golf team wrapped up final round play at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Tuesday afternoon. Senior Beau Briggs and sophomore Cecil Wegener fired 73's to pace the Rebels on the final day in Charleston.
The Rebels finished in 15th after a tough last 18 holes, shooting a 12-over 300. No. 20 South Carolina took home the team title at 22-under (279-286-277—842), while Kansas' Charlie Hillier won individual honors at 13-under through 54 holes.
"This was as bad of a week as we have had in quite some time," head coach Chris Malloy said. "In this game, it just happens and you have to have a short memory and be better from it."
"It seemed like everything that could go wrong did. Now we have to get back and regroup before our last regular season event and then postseason. I am very confident that these guys will respond."
Jackson Suber finished tied for 33rd after a final round 3-over 75, pacing the Rebels for the second time this season. After a rough start to his final round, he played his final 13 holes at 3-under. The freshman led the team in birdies with 13, and eagled the par-4 16th hole today, being one of just three golfers to accomplish that feat throughout the tournament. Suber went 70-73-75—218 to tally his eighth top-40 finish during his freshman campaign. He found success on the par 4's, going 4-under throughout the week to sit fourth in the field in par-4 scoring.
Briggs went 1-under on the front nine today to post a final round 73 (+1). After starting on the back nine, he made the turn and recorded three birdies coming down the stretch. The senior led the team in pars with 36 and played the par 5's under par for the tournament, going 1-under.
Wegener matched Briggs' low round of the day today for Ole Miss, finishing his tournament tied for 69th (77-76-74—227). He began the final round with a birdie on the par-5 10th before making back-to-back birdies on the front side. The sophomore improved each day, and was second on the team in pars with 35.
"Anyone can coach or be a player on a great team when things are going great and everyone is playing well," Malloy said. "What separates true champions, both players and coaches, from the rest are the ones that can handle a bad week and respond with a great tournament the next."
"As I told my guys earlier, I am 100 percent positive that this week will be a defining moment in our season. It can either be our wake up call that gets us going heading into the post season or it can let us lose confidence and head the other direction. I know that this group will let it be a good wake up call. Hotty Toddy!"
The Rebels return to the course on April 15-16, for the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship in West Point, Mississippi, the final tune-up before the SEC Championship (April 24-28).
