OXFORD, Miss. – With a virtual must-win situation at stake, the Ole Miss Women's Tennis team responded for a 4-2 victory Sunday against No. 16 Texas A&M inside the Galtney Indoor Tennis Center on Senior Day.
The Aggies (20-6, 8-5 SEC) earned the doubles point, but the Rebels (12-11, 5-8 SEC) showed toughness that did not relent throughout the match.
The No. 28 Aggie duo of Tatiana Makarova and Jayci Goldsmith held off the No. 85 pair of Sabina Machalova and Alexa Bortles, 6-4.
Senior Tea Jandric and Anna Vrbenska fought out a tough 7-5 win on Court 2 to keep the Rebels alive.
Court 3, however, went in favor of the Aggies with an identical 7-5 winner, putting the visitors ahead 1-0.
Singles started in emphatic fashion as Machalova defeated No. 50 Katya Townsend in two sets, 6-1, 6-3.
Texas A&M regained its final lead with a win on Court 6.
Ole Miss then rattled off three straight points for the eventual 4-2 triumph.

Opening Statement…
"I'm just so proud of the team, they've been through a lot this year. Even at the end of the season to put forth an effort like that today against a heck of a Texas A&M team is incredibly impressive. We've been playing pretty good tennis at (then-No. 6) Vanderbilt, at (then-No. 26) Kentucky. We've played some pretty good matches and came up just a little bit short, 4-3 (in each match). These kids just kept believing, kept believing. It didn't quite work out on Friday but on Senior Day they put it all together."
On how the team will use this win moving forward…
"Yeah we'll just kind of see what that means as far as rankings and postseason. I think the win gives us a first-day bye … But I think we've shown, and I think these girls know that whoever they put in front of us that we have an opportunity to win. And we were at match point with Vanderbilt who was No. 6 in the country last week, and then beating a team like (No. 16) Texas A&M who's just a really really good team. Regardless of who we play, I think the team feels confident and feel good about their chances."
