NORMAN, Okla. – The No. 34 Ole Miss women's golf team travels to Norman for the NCAA Regionals beginning on Monday.
It's the second postseason berth in as many years for Ole Miss and 11th time overall.
The Rebels are coming off a historic SEC Championship in Birmingham, where they were crowned conference champions for the first time in program history after defeating South Carolina in the finals of match play on Easter Sunday.
The Norman Regional includes No. 1 seed Texas, No. 2 Wake Forest, and the host, No. 5 Oklahoma. Three SEC foes join Ole Miss in Norman in Florida, Mississippi State and Texas A&M. The Rebels have seen all but four teams in the regional in competitions this year.
"We're looking forward to a great regional with some of the best talent in college golf," Ole Miss head coach Kory Henkes said. "Our goal from day one has been to make it back to the NCAA Championship and that's what we're going to try and do this week."
From the regional, the top six teams and three individuals will advance to the national championships to be played May 17-22, at Blessings Golf Club, hosted by the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
The starting five stays the same from the past five events. Julia Johnson will be in the No. 1 position, followed by Ellen Hutchinson-Kay, Conner Beth Ball, Kennedy Swann, and Macy Somoskey.
"We are really excited to get to Norman," Henkes said. "This team is very confident right now after our run at the SEC Championship. Everyone feels good about where their game is and we're ready for the challenge."
Johnson is coming off a runner-up finish individually at the SEC Championship, the best finish by a Rebel at the conference tournament in program history including going 3-0 during match play. Johnson leads the team in stroke average (72.71) and top-10 finishes with six. The St. Gabriel, Louisiana, native finished top-three at the San Francisco regional last year, the best individual finish in program history which led the team to their first NCAA Championship with her three rounds under par (71-72-67).
Hutchinson-Kay plays the two spot once again. The freshman is coming off a tied for 21st finish at her first even conference championship and is second on the team in stroke average (74.42).
Ball has made the lineup in all 12 tournaments this season with four top-10's. The sophomore finished tied for 27th at the San Francisco regional last year after an even-par final day to finish her NCAA debut at 2-over.
Swann comes into the regional having played on two NCAA tournament teams at Clemson. The junior transfer had a top-25 finish at the Tallahassee Regional last year, with a three-round score of 216 (E).
Somoskey makes her NCAA debut after leading her team to the first SEC Championship in program history just two weeks ago to the day. The freshman played 62 holes of match play throughout the weekend and turned in three match-deciding victories for the Rebels.
First round begins Monday morning with tee times for the Rebels starting at 8:20 a.m. CT. Ole Miss will be paired with Pepperdine and Purdue.
