Ole Miss Baseball's Group of 24 Newcomers Ranked Second Nationally
DURHAM, N.C. – Baseball America released its 2019 recruiting class rankings Thursday, and Ole Miss baseball landed at No. 2 in the nation, making this the second-highest-rated class in program history, behind the top-ranked 2016 class.
The 2020 Rebels began skill position work this week, welcoming in 24 newcomers, including 18 freshmen and six junior college transfers. Four of those incoming freshmen—Derek Diamond, Hayden Dunhurst, Jerrion Ealy and Trey LaFleur—were selected in the 2019 MLB Draft but elected to come to Oxford.
The Ole Miss class was slotted behind only defending national champion Vanderbilt and was one of nine Southeastern Conference representatives in the top 25. The SEC swept the top three spots with Vanderbilt at No. 1, Ole Miss at No. 2 and Florida at No. 3. That trio was joined by Mississippi State, LSU and Auburn in the top 10.
Four prospects out of Perfect Game's Top 50 highlight the Rebel class. Ealy, a two-sport athlete out of Jackson Prep who has already seen time with the Ole Miss football team this season, led the way for Ole Miss at No. 12 nationally. Athletic middle infielder Connor Walsh slotted at No. 27 in the nation, 10 spots ahead of right-hander Derek Diamond at No. 37. In-state catcher Hayden Dunhurst rounded out the group at No. 44 in the individual rankings.
Ole Miss is the only program in the country to enroll four top-50 prospects for its 2019 class.
After sending eight players off to the professional ranks in the 2019 MLB Draft, the Rebels are expecting numerous newcomers to contribute early.
The Rebel coaching staff also attracted some of the nation's top junior college talent, including NJCAA Player of the Year Cael Baker, NJCAA Second Team All-American Ben Van Cleve and NJCAA All-Region outfielder Hayden Leatherwood.
Season tickets are on sale now for the 2020 season, as well as season ticket renewals.
