BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Ole Miss track & field kicked off the 2020 season in dominant fashion, highlighted by eight individual titles and a pair of new school records from sophomore Brandee Presley and junior John Rivera Jr. at UAB's Blazer Invite on Friday.
Presley – a Bixby, Oklahoma native who lit the track on fire as a freshman – started 2020 off on the right note with a demonstrative day in the women's 60-meter dash. Presley broke Teneeshia Jones' 2001 record of 7.28 in the semifinal, running 7.27 to tie for the top prelim time before blowing away that record and the competition in the final, breaking her own record at a winning time of 7.18 to become the first Rebel to ever break 7.20. She currently ranks tied with Texas sophomore Julien Alfred for the top time in the NCAA this season.
Friday's exploits add onto an already thick resume for Presley, who ended her freshman campaign in 2019 with a spectacular streak of improvements in the 100-meter, ending with the school record at 11.19 (+2.0), becoming the first Rebel to ever break 11.20. In her first year, Presley earned two Second-Team All-American honors and a U.S. U20 gold medal before earning a silver in the 100-meter and gold in the women's 4x100-meter relay for Team USA at the Pan American U20 Championships.
Rivera, meanwhile, reset the school record in the non-standard 600-meter event, winning with a time of 1:17.90 to topple Thomas Johnson's 1991 time of 1:18.75. Rivera was a national qualifier for the Rebels in the 800-meter outdoors in 2019, earning Second-Team All-American status.
Junior transfer Avisake Bulai put on a show in her first meet as a Rebel, winning the women's weight throw with a huge effort on her second throw in an Ole Miss jersey. Bulai topped out at 21.53m (70-07.75), already the third-best throw in school history and the No. 3 throw in the NCAA this season. Fellow newcomer Jasmine Mitchell had a great debut as well, finishing third at 21.22m (69-07.50) – the fifth-best in Ole Miss history and No. 7 in the NCAA.
Junior Shey Taiwo had a solid open as well, as the returning Second-Team All-American finished fourth at 19.84m (65-01.25), currently No. 15 in the NCAA.
It was an Ole Miss sweep in the weight throw, as sophomore Joseph Benedetto took the men's title at a huge seven-foot PR of 20.62m (67-08.00) – vaulting him up to No. 3 in Ole Miss history and No. 8 in the NCAA this year.
Freshman Daniel Viveros, the top-ranked boys shot put prospect nationally out of high school, opened his Rebel career in strong fashion as well, finishing third at the sixth-best throw in school history at 16.56m (54-04.00). Fellow newcomer Danny Guiliani was fifth at the No. 9 throw in program history (15.36m/50-04.75), while three Rebel women also recorded top-10 all-time marks in the shot put from sophomore Tedreauna Britt (fifth, 15.46/50-04.75; No. 4 all-time), freshman Jalani Davis (seventh, 14.63m/48-00.00; No. 7 all-time) and Jasmine Mitchell (eighth, 14.59m/47-10.50; No. 8 all-time).
Senior Manny Foster had the best performance among Ole Miss jumpers, winning the triple jump with a three-foot PR of 15.71m (51-06.50). This mark ranks fourth in the NCAA this season and ninth in school history. Demond Fleming finished second in the event with a PR as well, recording the 15th-best jump in Ole Miss history at 15.17m (49-09.25).
Returning national qualifier and junior Allen Gordon had a solid start in both of his marquee events for the Rebel men. He began the meet with a second-place finish in the high jump at 2.15m (7-00.50) before winning the long jump at 7.45m (24-05.50). In his career, Gordon is one of two Rebels to have ever cleared 7-2 in the high jump and 25-5 in the long jump indoors, joining Olympian and NCAA Champion Savante' Stringfellow.
Ole Miss added another victory when freshman pole vaulter Lyndsey Reed took the event title in her first collegiate meet. She cleared 3.80 (12-05.50), which ranks as the seventh-best mark in school history. Ole Miss also emerged victorious in the men's pole vault, where junior Peyton Weissmann won with a mark of 5.10m (16-08.75).
Ole Miss also had success in the 60-meter hurdles. On the women's side, senior Kieshonna Brooks finished first and set a PR with a time of 8.42, which is tied-for-third in school history and No. 18 in the NCAA this year. Sophomore Kenney Broadnax set a huge PR for the Rebel men, becoming the fifth Rebel to break eight seconds with a time of 7.83 to finish second overall while putting him into a tie for fourth in program history and No. 7 in the NCAA this season. However, Broadnax suffered an injury as part of the Rebel men's 4x400-meter relay team at the conclusion of the meet.
Redshirt freshman Nick Moulai added another victory for Ole Miss on the track, competing for the first time in his collegiate indoor career. He earned his first victory in the mile with a time of 4:16.44. Ylvi Traxler (second place, 5:09.38) and Cate Tracht (third place 5:10.13) earned top-three finishes in the women's mile.
Ole Miss track & field returns to action next week when it heads to Nashville for the Vanderbilt Invitational on Jan. 17-18.
