Waleed Suliman Runs Top NCAA Mile Time to Conclude Vanderbilt Invitational

1/18/2020 | Track and Field

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Ole Miss track & field concluded its weekend stay in the Music City in spectacular fashion at the Vanderbilt Invitational on Saturday, winning two events and running several of the NCAA's fastest times this season, highlighted by junior Waleed Suliman's NCAA-leading mile time.

In total, the Rebels won four individual event titles and recorded 10 NCAA top-20 marks across competition on Friday and Saturday, adding onto an excellent start at UAB's Blazer Invite last week.

"I am excited at the progress that we are making," said Ole Miss head coach Connie Price-Smith. "We had a bunch of good performances today and yesterday across the board in all events. We still have some work to do in some areas, but all in all it was a very good showing by the Rebels. It's always nice to see personal bests and nation-leading marks from your team. I am really proud of how we have competed in the last two meets. We have to keep up the good work and keep working and on what needs to get better."

Suliman, the defending SEC Champion in the mile, showed once again why he is one of the most dominant athletes in the SEC and one of the most talented middle distance runners nationally, winning the men's mile at 3:57.03. Last season, Suliman set the Ole Miss record at 3:56.78 at Boston University's David Hemery Valentine Invite on Feb. 9, 2019. Only two other Rebels have ever broken the four-minute barrier in the mile, and they have all come within the last two years: All-Americans Sean Tobin (3:58.28, Feb. 3, 2018; 3:59.91, Feb. 15, 2014) and Derek Gutierrez (3:58.55, Feb. 9, 2019).

Fellow junior John Rivera Jr. also put the NCAA on notice with his performance in the men's 800-meter race. After breaking the school record in the non-standard 600-meter last week at UAB, Rivera ran a career-best 1:48.13, the No. 2 time in the NCAA this year and the fifth-best in Ole Miss history. His time is the fastest among active Rebel 800-meter runners, and it's the fastest overall by a Rebel since All-American Craig Engels clocked 1:47.54 at the 2017 SEC Championships.

Senior Michael Coccia kept the distance success rolling, winning the men's 3K at a time of 8:06.58, the No. 3 time nationally and the seventh-best in school history.

Freshman Lyndsey Reed, who won the pole vault in her Ole Miss debut last weekend at the Blazer Invite, claimed her second win in a row on Saturday. Reed cleared a PR of 3.85m (12-07.50) on her first attempt to move up to seventh all-time at Ole Miss. She was one of three in competition to have cleared that height, beating out Oklahoma's Gabby Carson and her own teammate, senior Nicole Kallenberger, on total misses.

Senior Kieshonna Brooks led the Rebel women on the track on Saturday, lowering her PR in the 60-meter hurdles for the second straight week. Brooks tied her career best in the prelims at 8.42 before clocking 8.38 in the final to finish third overall. With her time Saturday, Brooks moves into third all-time at Ole Miss after running the fastest hurdles time by a Rebel since 2008 (Kasey McDaniel, 8.37, Feb. 10, 2008).

Ole Miss also received another top-three finish in the women's 60-meter dash, with sophomore Kelly Rowe leading the way in third at 7.50 seconds – just three hundredths off her career best 7.47 from last season.

Also on the track, Ole Miss had a dominant showing in the unseeded women's 400-meter race. Rebel women claimed the top-three spots in those early races, led by sophomore Jayda Eckford at a PR of 55.65 that ranks tied for 14th all-time. She ultimately finished fourth overall after the seeded races were combined in the results. Freshman Kirstin Jones (10th, 56.99) and junior Toni Glatz (12th, 57.30) rounded out the Rebel squad.

Senior James Burnett represented the Rebels in the men's 400-meter dash, finishing runner-up with his best time in an Ole Miss uniform at 47.21 – the 11th-best time in program history.

Freshman Tedreauna Britt put together another career performance in the women's shot put, tossing an overall career-best 15.84m (51-11.75) to finish fifth overall. She also moved up to fourth all-time at Ole Miss and currently ranks No. 15 in the NCAA at that distance. Freshmen throwers Jalani Davis (11th, 14.89m/48-10.25) and Jasmine Mitchell (12th, 14.82m/48-07.50) also had solid outings, moving up to eighth and ninth in school history, respectively. Volunteer assistant coach Jessica Ramsey won with a world-leading 18.95m (62-02.25).

On the men's side junior Danny Guiliani and freshman Daniel Viveros solidifed themselves already as two of the best shot putters in Ole Miss history. Guiliani led the way in fourth place with a PR of 17.90m (58-08.75), the second-best throw in Ole Miss history. Viveros wasn't far behind in sixth place at 17.65m (57-11.00), the third-best mark ever at Ole Miss.

Ole Miss track & field returns to action Jan. 24-25 for the Rod McCravy Invitational, hosted by Kentucky.
