No. 1 Rifle Picks up Second Win of Season
OXFORD, Miss. – The top-ranked Rebels fired their way past No. 7 Memphis 4711-4658 Saturday afternoon en route to their second victory of the season. Further, the team aggregate score of 4711 ranked as the second-best in school history.
Overall, the top-five individuals in the match were Rebels, with Lea Horvath pacing the field for the second consecutive week. Sophomore Kristen Derting fired a strong score of 1178, the second-highest in the match, while Jillian Zakrzeski and Erin Walsh followed with marks of 1177. Freshman Martina Gratz rounded out the top-five with a career-best 1173 in her second collegiate match.
Ole Miss continued its impressive shooting from a week ago in smallbore, posting a team score of 2342, which ranks as the second-best in program history. Additionally, all five counters and seven total Rebels fired scores of 580 or better. Horvath and Walsh led the way with a pair of 587s, followed by Derting, just a point behind them. Walsh's mark was also a career-best that featured a perfect 200 prone. O'Neel turned in a score of 582, and Abby Buesseler, the final counter, fired a 580, closing out her score with six 10x shots.
Not factoring into the scoring was junior Zakrzeski and Gratz, who both posted career-best smallbore scores of 584 and 582, respectively.
In air rifle, the Rebels fired a 2369 and led the way with the top-eight athletes in the discipline. Horvath turned in the top score once again, firing a mark of 594. Buesseler and Derting posted identical marks of 592. Rounding out the counters were Martina Gratz with a 591 and O'Neel with a score of 590.
Zakrzeski's score of 593 in air rifle was the second-best in the match; however, she wasn't a counter. Senior Kamilla Kisch posted a season-high mark of 591, while Walsh turned in a 590.
No. 7 Memphis fired a team aggregate score of 4658 (2311 in smallbore and 2347 in air rifle) in the loss. The Tigers were paced by Taylor Gibson, who fired an 1173.
The Rebels will take a three-week break from competition before hosting their first home match of the season on Nov. 7 against defending GARC Champion Kentucky, currently ranked No. 2 in the nation behind Ole Miss.
