Rebels Host No. 11 Alaska Fairbanks
OXFORD, Miss. – Coming off an extended break from competition, the third-ranked Ole Miss rifle team is set to conclude its fall slate with a home match against No. 11 Alaska Fairbanks on Tuesday.
Competing at home for the first time this season, the Rebels look to strengthen their three-score average. In two matches, they have already posted the top two scores in school history, eclipsing the 4700 mark both times.
The Rebels enter the match as one of the most improved teams in the nation. They boast the top smallbore average in NCAA with a mark of 2351.5 and rank second in air rifle and total aggregate score with averages of 2369.0 and 4720.5.
Further, the team is comprised of three of the top nine individual performers in the country. Leading the way for Ole Miss this season has been freshman Lea Horvath. The Komarom, Hungary, native ranks as the third-best performer in the NCAA this season. She owns averages of 590 in smallbore and 595 in air rifle. A few spots behind her is Kristen Derting, with the fifth-best aggregate average (1181.5). Claire O'Neel sits in eighth nationally with an average mark of 1177.0.
Just outside the top 10 is senior Abby Buesseler, who is averaging an 1173.0 so far this season. Junior Erin Walsh and freshman Martina Gratz have also been key contributors for Ole Miss this season. Walsh has served as a counter in both matches this season, while Gratz factored into the team scoring in air rifle against Memphis.
The Rebels last shot against No. 7 Memphis a month ago, downing the Tigers 4711-4758, while Alaska Fairbanks is coming off their first two in-person matches of the season, a pair of victories also against Memphis (4698-4670 and 4697-4694). The Nanooks are led by Kellen McAferty and Jessica Boyce, with averages of 1175.5 and 1174.5, respectively.
The two teams faced off during the 2019-20 season in a neutral-site match, with Ole Miss picking up a 4673-4655 win.
