Ole Miss Track & Field Off Next Weekend, Returns Feb. 14-15 at Washington and Texas Tech
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Ole Miss track & field concluded its stay at the Indiana Relays with a handful of solid performances at Gladstein Fieldhouse on Saturday.
The distance action on the track was some of the best in the nation this weekend, as evidenced by strong fields in the seeded sections of the mile and 3K races.
In the men's 3K, senior Michael Coccia improved for the second straight meet, finishing fourth overall at 8:04.87 – a two-second PR that leads the SEC, ranks sixth all-time at Ole Miss and stands at No. 14 in the NCAA. Fellow senior Farah Abdulkarim opened his indoor season on Saturday in the 3K, finishing 12th overall at a career-best 8:13.68 – the third-best time in the conference and No. 14 in Ole Miss history.
Junior Anna Elkin ran in the fast section of the women's 3K herself, finishing seventh overall at a seven-second PR of 9:35.05. She now jumps from 12th to fifth all-time in school history, as well as No. 8 in the SEC this season.
Ole Miss also received two top-five finishes in stacked mile fields from juniors Everett Smulders (fourth, 4:05.04) and Maddie King (fifth, 4:50.41) in the men's and women's mile races, respectively. For King, that time currently ranks No. 4 in the SEC this year.
Freshman Lyndsey Reed continued to build on what has been a great freshman indoor season, finishing third overall in the women's pole vault on Saturday. Reed cleared a career-best height of 4.10m (13-05.25), already vaulting her up to fourth all-time at Ole Miss. Additionally, she ranks 23rd nationally and fourth in the NCAA among all freshmen women vaulters.
Ole Miss was well-represented in both the men's and women's 60-meter dash finals, with two finalists in each race.
In the women's final, sophomore and school record holder Brandee Presley finished as the runner-up at 7.40 seconds, while fellow sophomore Kelly Rowe took seventh at 7.64. Junior Elijah Dryer was the top men's finisher, capping off a superb weekend with a third-place finish at 6.81 seconds. Senior Andrew Raspo was fifth in the men's final at 6.90.
Senior Manny Foster finished as the top collegian in the men's triple jump in second place at 15.39m (50-06.00), and two other Rebel men earned runner-up finishes: John Rivera Jr. in the 800-meter (1:48.50) and James Burnett in the 400-meter dash (47.41).
Saturday was a busy day for the Rebel multi athletes, as Ole Miss received several strong performances across the women's pentathlon and men's heptathlon.
Senior and school record holder Kieshonna Brooks took runner-up honors in her first pentathlon of the season, notching 3,574 points that included wins in the 60-meter hurdles (8.71) and long jump (5.81m/19-00.75).
Freshman Sara Van Aken had an excellent outing, setting a career-best 3,511 points to take fourth place and move up to ninth all-time at Ole Miss. Van Aken recorded PRs in four of the five events, including a monster best in the high jump, which she won at a height of 1.75m (5-08.75). That stands tied for the fourth-best clearance in school history, and it is also tied for the best high jump mark ever by a Rebel in the pentathlon. Van Aken also won the shot put with a PR heave of 10.12m (33-02.50).
Both Rebel men competing in the heptathlon recorded career-best scores as well. Freshmen Pierce Genereux (fourth place, 4,324 points) and Peyton Lowery (sixth place, 4,003 points) represented Ole Miss in the heptathlon, recording the third and fifth-best scores in Rebel history, respectively.
Ole Miss also received a career day out of two freshmen in the women's shot put, building off an excellent outing by the Rebel women's throwers in the weight throw on Friday night. Jalani Davis finished sixth overall, launching a near two-foot PR of 15.61m (51-02.75), which pushed her to fifth all-time at Ole Miss.
