Nikhazy Perfect, Bats Hot in Five-Homer Affair
OXFORD, Miss. – The No. 8 Ole Miss Rebels today cruised to a blowout 15-0 victory over the Princeton Tigers to start the weekend out on a high note. Doug Nikhazy again turned in a gem, going six innings without a hit allowed and a new career best with 12 strikeouts. The pitching staff as a whole held the Tigers to just one hit on the entire night, the second-lowest mark for the Rebel pitching staff this season.
Even with Nikhazy's dominant night, all focus was on the Rebel bats as they exploded for a season-best 17 hits, 15 runs and five home runs. Tyler Keenan, Hayden Leatherwood, Tim Elko, Peyton Chatagnier and Kevin Graham all made it rain in right field with homers of their own. Three different Rebels picked up their second homers of the season today to increase the team total to nine different players with multi-homer games in 2020, while Ole Miss reclaimed their spot atop the national leaderboard with 26 home runs on the season.
The Rebels continued to pour it on the Tigers in the latter innings, but the bullpen arms deserve some recognition as well for holding Princeton to just hit on the night, and working to their third shutout of the season. The Tigers didn't record a hit until the eighth inning against Greer Holston and struck out 17 times against the combined arms of Nikhazy, Holston, and Logan Savell.
Ole Miss has now won 12 games in a row, their longest such streak since winning 12 consecutive games in 2016.
--
Nikhazy looked as strong as ever in six flawless innings, striking out twelve and walking just three. At one point late in his outing, he managed to strike out eight straight opposing batters. For the second time in three weeks, he didn't allow a single hit, and over his past three starts, he has allowed just two runs on four hits.
He also earned himself a new career high in strikeouts with 12, surpassing his previous career best of 10 last year vs. Texas A&M. On the season, he's lowered his ERA all the way down to 2.35, second only to Gunnar Hoglund amongst weekend starters.
Meanwhile at the plate, the Rebel bats were ensuring that Nikhazy's efforts didn't go unrewarded. They belted 17 hits and four homers throughout the contest, both a team-high for them this season.
Tyler Keenan got the Rebels started early with a pair of RBI singles in the first and third innings, respectively, as he just continued to add to his to team-best RBI total. Anthony Servideo added another run in the fourth with another RBI single, and the Rebels got off to an early 3-0 lead.
Servideo also reached base four separate times in today's game, and just continued to increase his team-high on base percentage, which sat at .610 before tonight.
If there was any hope for a potential Princeton comeback, the Rebels squashed all life out of the Tigers in the sixth inning. Ole Miss exploded for eight runs on eight hits and three home runs in the inning that saw the Rebels jump out to an 11-0 lead. Keenan, Hayden Leatherwood and Tim Elko all notched a homer in the frame to help the Rebels jump back to a nationwide lead in home runs on the season.
Greer Holston picked up where Nikhazy left off after the latter reached the 97 pitch count mark, and the senior captain quickly worked a 1-2-3 seventh inning. The Tigers did record their first hit of the night against Holston in the eighth on a leadoff single, but he quickly stranded him at third with two strikeouts and a groundout.
The Rebels added four more over the next two innings, capped by a two-run home run from the bat of Kevin Graham in the eighth that gave the Rebels a 15-0 lead and their fifth homer of the night.
It was all Ole Miss in today's first ever meeting with Princeton, but the Rebels will have to come back and take care of business over the next two days as they go for a complete series sweep over the Tigers.
Game 2 will begin tomorrow with a first pitch set for 1:30 p.m. CT, and Gunnar Hoglund on the bump for the Rebels.
