Rebels Among 22 Other Nationally Ranked Teams in Competition
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Ole Miss men's and women's cross country will conclude its regular season among a sea of other nationally ranked squads, as the Rebels will take to the NCAA Championship course at the Pre-National Invitational, hosted by Florida State this Friday. The meet will act as a preview for the NCAA Cross Country Championships, which will also take place at FSU's Apalachee Regional Park on November 20.
A total of 74 teams will compete in the seeded Garnet races beginning at 7 a.m. CT on Friday morning, followed by dozens of other schools in the open races. Among those 74 squads, 22 currently reside within the latest USTFCCCA National Coaches Poll – including Ole Miss, which ranks No. 14 in women's competition and No. 28 in the men's poll.
Those 28th-ranked Rebel men will be up first bright and early in the Garnet 8K race, and they will run into a stiff gauntlet of competition. Ole Miss will be among 12 nationally ranked schools in the men's race, running alongside No. 1 Northern Arizona, No. 2 Notre Dame, No. 5 BYU, No. 7 Colorado, No. 8 Arkansas, No. 17 Wake Forest, No. 20 Florida State, No. 22 Alabama, No. 24 Texas, No. 25 Weber State and No. 30 Charlotte.
Ole Miss is coming off an eighth-place team showing at the similarly strong Joe Piane Invitational at Notre Dame two weeks ago, where senior Mario Garcia Romo led the Rebels with a ninth-place individual finish to open his 2021 campaign. Garcia Romo earned All-American honors last season following a 30th-place individual finish at the NCAA Championships, and he is also the reigning SEC Champion and SEC Runner of the Year. Returning to action this week are Michael Coccia and Ben Savino, who also posted top-20 finishes at Notre Dame, as well as Nick Moulai, who won the men's open race.
Other Rebel men running on Friday include: Jeriel Algarin-Marquez, Cade Bethmann, Aiden Britt, Dereck Elkins, Jack Filan, Baylor Franklin, Dalton Hengst, Miles Phillips, Ben Savino, Jamie Witmer and James Young.
The No. 14 Rebel women took sixth at Notre Dame their last time out, only finishing behind five top-10 teams and beating out six other nationally ranked squads. The task doesn't get any easier at Florida State on Friday, as Ole Miss will be squaring off against No. 5 Colorado, No. 10 Utah, No. 11 Arkansas, No. 12 North Carolina, No. 15 Florida State, No. 16 Northern Arizona, No. 24 Georgetown, No. 27 Kentucky and No. 28 Toledo.
Indoor All-American Sintayehu Vissa is coming off consecutive career 5K races at both North Alabama and Notre Dame, and will look to lead the Rebel women again in their first 6K of 2021. Vissa finished 11th overall at Notre Dame at a 5K PR of 16:32.4, a four-second best after opening the season with a massive 2:28 personal best at UNA.
At Notre Dame, Ole Miss had four break the 17-minute plateau in the 5K for the second straight meet, with Vissa leading a scoring pack of Ryann Helmers (32nd, 16:50.5), Skylar Boogerd (37th, 16:54.8), Anna Elkin (47th, 16:59.2) and Loral Winn (78th, 17:18.6). Boogerd was the victor for the Rebel women at the North Alabama Showcase on Sept. 17, winning SEC Runner of the Week honors as a result.
All five return to the course tomorrow, as does Brooke Gilmore, Hannah Ielfield, Morgan Claire Rose, Cate Tracht, Kristel van den Berg and Lydia van Dijk.
The men's Garnet 8K race will open competition at 7 a.m. CT, followed by the women's Garnet 6K at 7:35 a.m. CT and the open races to follow immediately after.
