Successful Start to Split Weekend for Track & Field at Florida and Virginia

4/16/2021 | Track and Field

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Mother Nature continued to affect at least some Rebels on Friday, but it was still another strong day for the split Ole Miss men's and women's track & field squads at Florida's Tom Jones Classic and UVA's Virginia Challenge.

Weather was not an issue for the handful of distance runners out in Charlottesville for the Virginia Challenge, however, which was the sight of the highlight of the night for Ole Miss. Senior Anna Elkin collected another school record to her name, finishing sixth and running a massive 25-second PR in the invitational section of the women's 5K at 16:01.34 – breaking Clio Ozanne-Jaques' 2019 record of 16:05.55 to rank 30th in the NCAA this year.

On the men's side, a few more Rebels climbed the school leaderboards in Virginia. Robinson Snider (15th) and Ben Savino (21st) both recorded massive personal bests in the invitational 10K race, with Snider clocking an 86-second best at 29:50.82 and Savino a 79-second best at 30:35.07 – the seventh and 11th-best times in Ole Miss history, respectively.

Down in Gainesville, the Rebels had to wait out a lengthy lightning delay, but once competition resumed Ole Miss was ready to go. Loral Winn had herself a race in the women's 1500-meter, finishing sixth overall at a PR of 4:19.00 in just her second career 1500 race as a Rebel. That time stands as the second-best in program history, and just one week ago would have stood as a school record if not for Sintayehu Vissa's amazing 4:16.70 atop the leaderboard. Makayla Fick also notched a top-15 all-time performance in 17th place at 4:27.61 (No. 15 all-time).

The women's distance squad wasn't done there, however, with two more Rebels recording all-time bests in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Kristel van den Berg and Morgan Claire Rose took fourth and fifth, respectively, with van den Berg's 10:17.46 ranking third all-time and Rose's 10:34.55 standing at No. 8.

Cade Bethmann came away as the victor in the men's 1500-meter at a season-best time of 3:41.96. Michael Coccia wasn't too far behind with a personal-best 3:45.49 that cracked the top-15 all-time in the event.

All-American senior Allen Gordon tied his outdoor career-best in the high jump, finishing as the runner-up at 2.16m (7-01.00) – the fifth-best height in school history and currently tied for No. 18 in the nation. Gordon added a fifth-place finish in the long jump at 7.47m (24-06.25).

Ole Miss placed three into the women's discus final, with Jalani Davis leading the pack with a throw of 51.32m (168-04). Shey Taiwo tossed a season-best 49.62m (162-09), while Tedreauna Britt took sixth place at 49.48m (162-04). On the men's side, Daniel Viveros had another productive day in the shot put, making the final and finishing sixth at 17.71m (58-01.25).

The Rebels will be solely focused on Florida tomorrow, with action set to begin again at 9 a.m. CT with the women's hammer.
