Ole Miss Records Four NCAA Top-20 Times or Marks on Saturday Alone

GAINESVILLE Fla. – Ole Miss men's and women's track & field faced stiff competition in fields that saw both top collegians and pros alike, but still came away with several performances near the top of the NCAA leaderboard to conclude Florida's Tom Jones Memorial on Saturday.

All-American senior Waleed Suliman – fresh off a splendid 1500-meter opener at home last week – took a stab at the 800-meter this time around and came away with a win. Suliman, in his first outdoor 800-meter race since his freshman year in 2018, finished with a time of 1:47.74 as the victor. The time is just narrowly off his career-best 1:47.29 set in 2018, and launches him all the way up to No. 10 in the NCAA this year. At the moment (using the TFRRS descending lists heading into this weekend), only Suliman and Alabama's Eliud Kipsang hold times below 1:48 in the 800-meter and 3:37 in the 1500-meter (Suliman ran 3:36.53 last week).

Also running 800-meter PRs in that race were Everett Smulders (fifth, 1:50.30) and Marcus Dropik (ninth, 1:50.70).

Sophomore Sintayehu Vissa continued to etch her name all across the Ole Miss record books, this week stenciling herself in on the 800-meter all-time list. Vissa – who just last week demolished the Ole Miss record in the 1500-meter in her first career attempt at 4:16.70 – ran the fastest 800-meter time in six years and the second-best ever by a Rebel at 2:05.01 to finish fifth overall and put her No. 16 in the NCAA. Loral Winn, who last night ran the second-fastest 1500-meter time in school history (4:19.00), finished with another top-10 time today at 2:08.12 in 14th place (No. 10 all-time at Ole Miss).

The Ole Miss women's throwers had another spectacular day of competition as well. Shey Taiwo started things off right early in the morning in the women's hammer, winning on a more than six-foot best at 66.35m (217-08). That throw puts her No. 3 all-time and just one inch shy of teammate Jasmine Mitchell in second all-time (66.37m/217-09), making Ole Miss one of just two schools this season (alongside Cal) to have multiple women's hammer throwers at or beyond 217 feet. At the moment, Taiwo ranks No. 12 in the NCAA.

Other Rebels making the women's hammer final included Mitchell (fifth, 62.68m/205-07) and Deborah Bulai (eighth, 58.65m/192-05).

Her teammate, Jalani Davis, put together a huge PR of her own over in the women's shot put. Davis became just the third Rebel member of the 17-meter club at a two-foot PR of 17.01m (55-09.75), finishing as the top collegian behind pro Lloydricia Cameron (17.94m/58-10.25). Other Rebels to have eclipsed 17 meters in the shot put include Olympian Raven Saunders (19.76m/64-10) and All-American Janeah Stewart (18.03m/59-02). At the moment, Davis ranks No. 18 in the NCAA.

Tedreauna Britt had a day in the shot put as well, finishing fifth at a one-foot PR of 16.10m (52-10) to move into No. 7 all-time and No. 40 on the NCAA list this year.

Also winning on Saturday was Nicole Rice, who took the women's 3K title at a time of 10:02.38.

Up next, the Rebels will travel to Fayetteville, Arkansas to take part in the National Relays, hosted by the University of Arkansas on April 23-24.
