Ole Miss Track & Field Splits for Florida and Virginia

Rebels to Compete at Florida’s Tom Jones Memorial and UVA’s Virginia Challenge
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Ole Miss men's and women's track & field will split squad for the first time this outdoor season, with four distance runners heading to Charlottesville for the Virginia Challenge and the remainder of the team going to Florida for the Tom Jones Memorial.
WOMEN'S NOTES
• Ole Miss enters the weekend with two of the top pole vaulters in the NCAA following a splendid meet at home last week at the Joe Walker Invite. Lyndsey Reed currently sits ninth in the nation at 4.28m (14-00.50), the second-best height in school history that also made her just the second Rebel to ever join the 14-foot club indoors or outdoors. Samara McConnell also ranks in the top-20 in 18th at her outdoor PR of 4.18m (13-08.50), the fourth-best in school history that also earned her SEC Freshman of the Week honors this past week.
• Ole Miss stands as one of just two school in the NCAA to have three or more women's hammer throwers at or beyond 200 feet alongside North Dakota State. Jasmine Mitchell, in just her third outdoor meet as a Rebel, already ranks second all-time and 11th in the NCAA this season at 66.37m (217-09). Other 200-foot throwers this season include Shey Taiwo (22nd, 64.33m/211-01) and Jalani Davis (27th, 63.54m/208-05).
• In her first career 1500-meter race, Rebel newcomer Sintayehu Vissa dismantled the Ole Miss record by three seconds at 4:16.70 – currently the 16th-best time in the NCAA. Vissa also helped rabbit a blistering 800-meter at the Joe Walker Invite last week, bringing the pack through the first 400 in 59.9 seconds.

MEN'S NOTES
• All-American senior Waleed Suliman led one of the fastest 1500-meter races at the distance-heavy Joe Walker Invite last week, clocking the NCAA's second-best time at 3:36.53. The time is a U.S. Olympic Trials standard for Suliman, who became a U.S. citizen in late 2019 after spending his childhood across Sudan, Jordan and Virginia. Suliman's time puts him at No. 2 in Ole Miss history as well behind Robert Domanic's 2018 record of 3:36.33, which was the ninth-fastest in NCAA history at the time it was run.
• Mario Garcia Romo was right behind Suliman in that blazing 1500-meter race, finishing at the NCAA's third-best time of 3:37.17. Also running an NCAA top-50 time in that heat was Everett Smulders at 3:42.86 (35th).
• Ole Miss also received two fast 800-meter races from Baylor Franklin and Cade Bethmann, with Franklin clocking the NCAA's 15th-best time at an overall PR 1:48.27, and Bethmann the 23rd at a season-best 1:48.76.
• All-American senior Allen Gordon ranks NCAA top-25 in both the long jump (21st, 7.71m/25-03.50) and high jump (23rd, 2.15m/7-00.50). After setting a career-best 15.29m (50-02.00) last week, Gordon currently stands as the only jump in the NCAA to have cleared seven feet in the high jump, 25' 3.50: in the long jump and 50' 2" in the triple jump.

• Ole Miss is in year six under head coach Connie Price-Smith, who has led the Rebels to new heights in her time in Oxford with seven NCAA top-25 team finishes, four NCAA individual titles, 39 SEC individual titles and 98 First or Second-Team All-American awards. In 20 years as a head coach at both Ole Miss and Southern Illinois dating back to 2002, Price-Smith has collected 12 NCAA event titles and mentored 167 All-Americans on the track.
