Kacey Hvitved’s Three-Run Bomb Highlights 14th Rebel Shutout of the Year
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss (29-14) started slow but found its footing late in the game, ultimately making short work of UT Martin (22-13) 8-0 in six innings at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
Ava Tillmann picked up her seventh win of the campaign, holding the Skyhawks to two hits in five innings of work, putting four strikeouts on the board. In her lone inning of relief, freshman Aynslie Furbush retired the side in order with a pair of Ks.
After three quiet innings to start the game, Ole Miss brought the noise in the fifth. The Rebels loaded the bases and opened scoring on a fielder's choice from Gabby Alvarez, bringing home Jessica Puk. Then, after a passed ball allowed Abbey Latham to score, pinch hitter Kacey Hvitved put a charge in an elevated pitch, tattooing a three-run home run over the left field fence to make it 5-0 Ole Miss after four.
In the later innings the Rebels started to use their legs to build on the lead, with Puk reaching on a fielder's choice and moving up to third on a stolen base and a passed ball. Latham followed with her second hit of the game, beating a ball into the dirt and over the third baseman to add an insurance run.
In the sixth, the Rebels loaded the bases on a Nyomi Jones single and HBP and a walk before Paige Smith dropped a single into left, bringing in a pair of runs to bring the run rule into effect and end the game early.
