Ole Miss to Race Against 23 Other Ranked Schools
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Ole Miss men's and women's cross country will square off against a total of 22 other nationally ranked squads at the high-powered Joe Piane Invitational hosted at Notre Dame on Friday morning.
In total, Ole Miss stands as one of 12 ranked women's schools and 11 ranked men's schools running in the elite Blue races. In the latest USTFCCCA national coaches poll released on Tuesday, the Rebels sit at No. 15 on the women's side and No. 18 in men's competition.
The Rebel women, who are coming off a bombastic 70-point team win at the North Alabama Showcase on Sept. 17, face a steep challenge but will feature much of the same roster that dominated at UNA. Ole Miss will put its national ranking to the test against the likes of No. 1 NC State, No. 3 New Mexico, No. 6 Alabama, No. 7 Minnesota, No. 8 Washington, No. 18 Florida State, No. 19 Notre Dame, No. 21 Indiana, No. 23 Illinois and co-No. 29 teams Furman and Princeton.
Ole Miss clocked five sub-17 minute 5Ks at UNA two weeks ago, with all five scoring within the top-seven at a spread of just 31 seconds. Leading that charge was junior Skylar Boogerd, who was named SEC Runner of the Week after dropping a massive 41-second PR of 16:28.01 to win her first career race – the fastest regular season time in the SEC since 2019 and 10th-best since 2016. Other top scorers included indoor All-American Sintayehu Vissa in third (16:36.58), Ryann Helmers in fourth (16:37.29), Anna Elkin in fifth (16:49.68) and Loral Winn in seventh (16:59.96). All five will run on Friday morning, as well as Makayla Fick, Brooke Gilmore, Hannah Ielfield, Morgan Claire Rose, SEC Freshman of the Week Addy Stevenson, Cate Tracht, Kristel van den Berg and Lydia van Dijk.
The No. 18 Rebel men will run at full strength Friday morning, and will do so against an equally as powerful field of No. 2 Notre Dame, No. 10 Butler, No. 15 Alabama, No. 18 Ole Miss, No. 19 Furman, No. 25 Michigan, No. 26 Indiana, No. 28 Weber State, No. 29 Florida State and No. 30 Purdue.
Ole Miss finished fourth at UNA two weeks ago, but this will be the first meet to feature most of the Rebels' deep roster – led by All-Americans Mario Garcia Romo and Cole Bullock. Garcia Romo will run for the first time in 2021 following a splendid campaign last year that saw him win the SEC individual cross country title, claim two SEC titles indoors, and score 12 NCAA points by himself across the indoor and outdoor seasons. Bullock, who finished as SEC runner-up to Garcia Romo as part of a historic 1-2-3 SEC podium sweep, was the top Rebel finisher at the NCAA Cross Country Championships last March in 18th place.
Aiden Britt, Dereck Elkins, Baylor Franklin, Dalton Hengst and Nick Moulai all return to the course tomorrow, but will be joined by seven making their season debuts: Bullock, Garcia Romo, Cade Bethmann, Michael Coccia, Cruz Culpepper, Chris Maxon and Ben Savino.
Competition begins with the women's Blue 5K at 9:30 a.m. CT, followed by the men's Blue 5-mile race at 10:15 a.m. CT.
