Rebels Take Full Advantage of Ram Miscues
OXFORD, Miss. – VCU committed five errors on the night on Friday and Ole Miss took full advantage, topping the Rams in the series opener 10-4 at Swayze Stadium.
Making his third straight start in place of Hayden Dunhurst, Calvin Harris continued his hot streak, posting a pair of hits to move to .600 on the year. Meanwhile, Peyton Chatagnier racked up three RBIs, driving in Reagan Burford three times on sacrifice flies.
Derek Diamond picked up his second win on the rubber, delivering five innings with two unearned runs allowed on five hits. Hunter Elliott came on in relief of the California native and struck out four of the seven batters he faced, with Mitch Murrell and Mason Nichols also coming out of the bullpen.
After VCU (2-3) cashed in on a Rebel error to take an early one-run lead, Burford grabbed the lead for good in the second with a two-run double down the left line. A couple batters later, Chatagnier brought the sophomore around with a fly ball to left, putting Ole Miss (5-0) up 3-1.
The Rams pulled a run back in the fourth but the Rebels again had a response, with Harris spanking a double down the right line to plate Ben Van Cleve. In a replay of the second, Chatagnier again lifted a ball to left, giving Burford plenty of time to come home for a sac fly.
After Kevin Graham made it three games in a row with a home run, crushing a no-doubt bomb to right in the fifth, Burford tacked on another run in the sixth with a sacrifice to center that was dropped, later scoring on Chatagnier's third sacrifice to left. Another couple of runs scored later in the inning off a Ram error as the throw to first on Jacob Gonzalez's grounder was dropped, allowing Harris and Graham to come in.
VCU took advantage of an errant Chatagnier throw to score a pair in the ninth but it wasn't nearly enough as Nichols struck out the side to lock up the fifth win in a row to start the year for the Rebels.
