Dunhurst Launches Three-Run Shot in Losing Effort
OXFORD, Miss. – Tennessee held on to beat Ole Miss 4-3 in game three of their Southeastern Conference weekend series at Swayze Field.
The Rebels (16-7, 2-4 SEC) trailed 4-0 when things got interesting in the eighth inning. After a single by Kemp Alderman had ended UT starter Drew Beam's day, and Hayden Leatherwood had welcomed reliever Camden Sewell with a base hit, Hayden Dunhurst homered to right to cut the Vols' lead to one run.
After Rebel reliever Brandon Johnson gave up a single but no damage in the top of the ninth, Reagan Burford singled to shallow center on the first pitch of the bottom of the ninth, and the Rebels still had life. After strikeouts by T.J. McCants and Alderman, Leatherwood reached on an error on the UT second baseman. However, the game ended when Dunhurst struck out.
Starter Derek Diamond gave Ole Miss a solid outing of four and two-thirds innings, but his offensive teammates had a tough time with Beam through the early innings.
While Diamond was in the game, Tennessee (23-1, 6-0 SEC) scored three runs on six hits. The Vols struck out twice and the Rebel starter didn't allow any free passes.
Riley Maddox took Diamond's place on the mound in the fifth and got the final out of the inning with a Volunteer stranded at first.
The Rebels' first hit of the game came in the third inning on a Dunhurst single with two outs. But Chatagnier struck out to end anything else offensively in the frame.
After Tennessee scored a run in the top of the sixth for a four-run lead, Ole Miss appeared to have an opportunity in the bottom of the sixth. Leatherwood led things off with a double to the wall. But three outs later, he was stranded at third.
Johnson came in to replace Maddox with Volunteers on first and second and two outs in the seventh. Johnson got Drew Gilbert to ground out to end that inning.
But soon after that, things got very interesting. Unfortunately, Ole Miss came up just short.
Ole Miss will look to get back on track on Tuesday, taking on North Alabama at Swayze Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT, with streaming available via SEC Network + and the call being available on the Ole Miss Radio Network.
