First Penn Relays Title for Ole Miss Since 2000
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Ole Miss men's track & field put on a show on one of the biggest stages in the sport, winning the distance medley relay crown in thrilling fashion to lead the Rebels at Day Two of the Penn Relays on Friday.
The Rebel quartet of Cade Bethmann (1200-meter; 2:56.03), John Rivera Jr. (400-meter; 47.32), Baylor Franklin (800-meter; 1:47.75) and Mario Garcia Romo (mile; 3:58.36) broke the outdoor DMR school record with their win today in the College Men's Distance Medley Relay Championship of America, crossing the line in 9:29.45 to edge out Wisconsin (9:29.79) for the win by a quarter-second to bring home a wheel to Oxford. Garcia Romo carried the Rebels on that anchor leg, and upon the Ole Miss victory unleashed his signature baseball swing with the baton in celebration.
That 9:29.45 takes down a 37-year-old Ole Miss record of 9:36.75 set in 1985 by the Rebel foursome of Victor Shine, Melvin Dean, Cornelius Tate and Doug Smith. The DMR is a non-standard event outdoors, but indoors the Rebels are one of the very best to ever do it, with their NCAA runner-up time of 9:20.75 from the 2021 national meet standing as the fourth-fastest in world history.
In the outdoor record book, Ole Miss' time today puts them No. 11 all-time in NCAA history with the 16th-fastest time. Additionally, it is the fastest run outdoors since Oregon clocked a 9:25.40 at the 2014 Penn Relays.
This win marks the ninth all-time win by the Rebels in the 126 editions of the historic Penn Relays, their first since Savante' Stringfellow won the men's long jump in 2000. Additionally, it is the fifth Rebel win in the prestigious Championship of America series, joining previous wins by Ralph Spry in the long jump in 1983 (26-04.25), the men's sprint medley relay of Kevin Buffington, Michael Cox, Thomas Johnson and George Kersh in 1990 (3:14.98), Pablo Sierra in the 5K in 1991 (13:51.22), and the men's 4x400-meter relay of Alonzo Banks, Jimmy Love, Savante' Stringfellow and Wayne Woolery in 1999 (3:05.19).
Ole Miss nearly snared another wheel to bring back home in the women's edition of the College Distance Medley Relay Championship of America, with the Rebel quartet of Skylar Boogerd (1200-meter; 3:23.49), Toni Glatz (400-meter; 55.78), Loral Winn (800-meter; 2:04.70) and Sintayehu Vissa (mile; 4:31.66) dismantling the school record by nearly a minute at 10:55.61. The Rebels finished runner-up to BYU, which ran the third-fastest time in NCAA history outdoors to win at 10:50.22.
That 10:55.61 by the Rebels puts them No. 7 in NCAA history with the 11th-fastest time ever run outdoors, and it is also the fastest ever run by an Ole Miss women's DMR indoors or outdoors. It shattered the previous Ole Miss women's outdoor record of 11:44.51 set at the 2012 Florida Relays, and it even edges out the SEC Indoor meet record of 10:56.39 set by the Rebel group of Anna Elkin, Jayda Eckford, Winn and Vissa earlier this year.
Ole Miss also had a handful compete down in Starkville at the Maroon & White Invite on Friday night. Shane Bracken finished runner-up in the invitational section of the men's 1500-meter at a career-best 3:40.83, which ranks No. 5 in Ole Miss history as well as No. 45 in the NCAA and No. 21 in the East Region this season. In the invitational men's 800-meter, Marcus Dropik took third at an overall PR of 1:48.95, which moves him up to No. 40 in the East Region.
Ole Miss will close competition at Penn Relays on Saturday with two more chances to bring home a wheel in the College Women's 4x1500-Meter Relay Championship of America at 11:30 a.m. CT and the College Men's 4x800-Meter Relay Championship of America at 2:02 p.m. CT within the national broadcast window on ESPN2. Additionally, the remainder of the Rebel track & field team will begin competition at the LSU Invitational at 9:30 a.m. CT with the women's discus.
