January 20-21 • Nashville, Tenn.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Ole Miss track & field makes a return trip to Nashville, with both Rebel squads competing at the Vanderbilt Invitational this weekend. Competition runs Jan. 20-21 and will stream live on SECN+.

MEET NOTES

• This is the second of three stops at Vanderbilt for the Rebels this indoor season. Ole Miss opened the 2023 campaign in Nashville last week for the Commodore Challenge, and will return again next month for the Music City Challenge on Feb. 10-11.

• Other teams in competition at Vanderbilt this week include: Alabama-Huntsville, Alabama A&M, Alcorn State, Arkansas State, Auburn, Austin Peay, Belmont, UCF, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Jacksonville State, Kentucky, Louisiana, ULM, Little Rock, Memphis, Middle Tennessee, Murray State, SMU, Southern Miss, Tennessee, Tennessee State, TCU, Tusculum and Vanderbilt.

• Ole Miss is coming off an excellent open to the 2023 season last week, entering this week with 16 times or marks within the NCAA top-50 (nine men, seven women). That includes six within the NCAA top-16 and the NCAA's No. 1 and No. 2 marks in the women's weight throw from Jalani Davis and Jasmine Mitchell.

• Ole Miss earned two weekly awards from the SEC this past week, with Davis being named SEC Co-Women's Field Athlete of the Week, and Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan winning SEC Men's Freshman of the Week.

• Last week, 21 newcomers made their Rebel debuts, with four more Ole Miss athletes scheduled to make their track debut this weekend: freshman Sophie Baumann, senior Anthony Camerieri, redshirt freshman Hannah Ielfield and senior Jocelyn Long. In total, Ole Miss welcomed 35 new faces for the 2023 track seasons.

WOMEN'S NOTES

• Ole Miss owns seven NCAA top-50 marks on the women's side, led by a powerful one-two punch in the women's weight throw from Jalani Davis and Jasmine Mitchell.

• Davis earned her SEC weekly honors after setting the NCAA lead in the weight throw on a four-foot personal best 24.13m/79-2. That throw currently ranks second in the world for 2023 and gives her a one-foot NCAA lead over Mitchell, who ranks second in the NCAA and third worldwide at 23.81m/78-01.50.

• That performance also moved Davis up to No. 8 in collegiate history with the 23rd-best throw all-time, giving Ole Miss four entries in the all-time top-10 who are all beyond 79 feet: 2022 NCAA Champion Shey Taiwo (second, 25.55m/83-10; 2022), Mitchell (third, 24.94m/81-10; 2022), Davis (eighth, 24.13m/79-2; 2023) and former Rebel great Janeah Stewart (24.12m/79-01.75; 2018). Stewart set the 2023 world lead in the weight throw at Vanderbilt last week, besting out Davis with a toss of 24.48m/80-03.75.

• In addition to owning 40 percent of the all-time collegiate top-10, Ole Miss has 41 of the 113 total 23-meter throws in collegiate history (36.3 percent). Of those 113, NCAA champ Shey Taiwo collected 21 in her Rebel career (18.6 percent) and Janeah Stewart owns nine, while current Rebels Jasmine Mitchell (9) and Jalani Davis (2) combine for 11 career 23-meter tosses. At the 24-meter plateau, Ole Miss has 13 of 33 total in NCAA history (39.4 percent) -- with Taiwo owning nine such throws by herself (27.3 percent), in addition to four of the top-10 tosses all-time.

• At four 24-meter throwers all-time, Ole Miss stands as the lone school in the nation to have more than one beyond the 24-meter mark.

• Mitchell also ranks high on the national leaderboard in the shot put after her indoor PR of 16.77m/55-00.25 from last week. She currently sits at No. 8 nationally and No. 2 in the SEC at that mark, which also improved upon her spot in fourth all-time at Ole Miss.

• Senior Tedreauna Britt also had a strong open in the weight throw, coming within three inches of her career best at 19.97m/65-06.25 -- currently No. 22 in the NCAA.

• Senior transfer Jaiden Paris began her Ole Miss career with a third-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles at Vanderbilt last week, and in the prelim she ran 8.40 -- the fourth-best in Ole Miss history. That time currently puts Paris No. 45 in the NCAA this season. Paris was the Big Ten bronze medalist in the hurdles while at Michigan State last season, running her career-best 8.25 in the Big Ten prelims.

• The Ole Miss pole vault duo of junior Samara McConnell and senior Lyndsey Reed gave the Rebels a one-two punch at Vanderbilt last week, with both clearing 4.00m/13-01.50 as McConnell won outright on total misses. That height puts them into a tie for 39th nationally and sixth in the SEC so far this season.

• Reed, a Second-Team All-American last season indoors, holds both Ole Miss records both indoors and outdoors at 4.41m/14-05.50.

• Senior transfer McKenzie Long etched her name into the Ole Miss record books in her first race as a Rebel, breaking the long-standing women's school record in the 300-meter dash. Long won at 37.38 to break Sonya Varnell's 1987 record of 37.58, which was a conversion of her 37.8 in the 300-yard dash. Freshman Gabrielle Matthews of Jamaica had a strong Ole Miss debut as well, finishing fifth overall at 38.83.

• Other notable women's performances from Vanderbilt last week include Kyla McLaurin in the triple jump (third, 12.11m/39-08.75), Ariyonna Augustine in the 60-meter dash (third, 7.47) and Graycyn Yelverton in the 400-meter dash (first, 56.84).

• Rebel women making their 2023 season or overall Ole Miss career debuts this week are: freshman Sophie Baumann, senior Jayda Eckford, sophomore Madison Hulsey, redshirt freshman Hannah Ielfield, senior Jocelyn Long, senior Kristel van den Berg and senior Loral Winn.

MEN'S NOTES

• Freshman Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan opened his Rebel career with a massive effort in the men's weight throw at Vanderbilt, breaking the Ole Miss record by three feet on his winning throw of 22.24m/72-11.75 – claiming victory by more than seven feet. At that distance, Robinson-O'Hagan leads the SEC, ranks No. 3 in the NCAA, No. 6 in the United States and No. 7 worldwide this season.

• Robinson-O'Hagan leads all freshmen nationally by more than six feet, and he is only the third collegiate true freshman (second in Division I) since 2014 to break 22 meters, and the only freshman in that same timespan to do so in their first meet. The only other true freshmen to break 22 meters since 2014 are Clemson's Daniel Cope in 2022 (22.28m/73-01.25) and Division II Ashland's Brent Fairbanks in 2018 (22.16m/72-08.50).

• Robinson-O'Hagan also won the shot put by one foot at 18.75m/61-06.25, which puts him into a tie for No. 2 in Ole Miss history, and this year ranks No. 4 in the SEC and No. 12 in the NCAA.

• Fellow shot putter and senior Daniel Viveros also enters this week in the NCAA top-20 at his season-opening performance of 18.44m/60-06.00 last week, which ranks 18th nationally and fifth in the SEC.

• Senior hurdler Ahmad Young Jr. had an excellent day at Vanderbilt last week, notching two qualifying performances and three total career bests. Young won the 60-meter hurdles after clocking a personal best 7.82, pushing him to fourth in Ole Miss history and 14th nationally this year. Young already had run a PR in the prelim at 7.89, and not long after in the 60-meter dash prelim he topped out at a PR 6.80 – 13th-best in school history.

• Fellow senior and hurdler Kenney Broadnax also clocked an NCAA top-50 time last week, currently ranking 31st nationally and eighth in the SEC at his season-best 7.90.

• Other notable men's performances from Vanderbilt last week include senior Noah Mumme in the pole vault (second, 5.10m/16-08.75; No. 34 NCAA, No. 3 SEC), sophomore Iangelo Atkinstall-Daley in the triple jump (third, 15.21m/49-11; No. 36 NCAA, No. 6 SEC) and freshman Arvesta Troupe in the high jump (first, 2.08m/6-09.75; No. 44 NCAA, No. 5 SEC).

• Rebel men making their 2023 season or overall Ole Miss career debuts this week are: senior Shane Bracken, senior Anthony Camerieri, senior Tiarnan Crorken, junior Marcus Dropik, junior Dereck Elkins, senior Baylor Franklin and sophomore Cole Piotrowski.
