Cross Country in Search of National Tickets at NCAA South Regional
11/8/2023 | Cross Country
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Ole Miss cross country will look to punch its tickets to the national meet when the Rebel men's and women's squads toe the line at the NCAA South Regional, held at Florida's Mark Bostick Golf Course on Friday morning.
The key prize for teams running in the nine NCAA Regional meets across the United States on Friday will be the top-two automatic qualifier spots to the national championship, which this year will be hosted by Virginia on Nov. 18.
An additional 13 at-large teams and a variable number of additional individuals not attached to a qualified team are chosen through a national selection process. The NCAA Selection Show is set for Sat., Nov. 11 at 4 p.m. CT on NCAA.com. The top-25 finishers at each regional earn All-Region honors.
The No. 24 Rebel women will be looking for an NCAA berth in arguably one of the toughest regional races nationwide on Friday, stacking up as one of five nationally ranked teams running in the South Regional. It will be a bit of déjà vu for Ole Miss, which just ran against four ranked teams at the SEC Championships two weeks ago. This week, the Rebels will be competing for national tickets alongside fellow ranked schools No. 6 Florida, No. 15 Tennessee, No. 16 Alabama and No. 19 Lipscomb.
The Ole Miss women will be looking to make a return trip to the national meet after just narrowly missing out on a team berth in 2022 following a third place finish at the South Regional. The Rebels first qualified for nationals in 2016 and proceeded to earn a berth in each of the next five seasons.
Senior and All-SEC runner Loral Winn is coming off an excellent outing, leading the Rebel women with a ninth-place overall finish at 19:57.6 – her third career sub-20 6K time among just eight total in recorded Ole Miss women's history. Winn is one of two returning All-South Region runners from last year's squad alongside fellow senior Ryann Helmers, who has been All-Region each of the last two years for the Rebels.
Last season, Helmers was Ole Miss' top women's finisher at the regional meet in ninth place overall, which was good enough for her to earn an individual at-large berth to the NCAA Championships. Between Helmers and Winn, the Rebel duo owns six of the eight known sub-20 6K times in Ole Miss women's history.
Other Rebel women scheduled to run on Friday morning are sophomore Sophie Baumann, senior Skylar Boogerd, junior Madison Hulsey, junior Hannah Ielfield and sophomore Sarah Schiffmann.
The Rebel men, meanwhile, are looking to finish out a tough season marred by injuries on a positive note with a strong race at the South Regional to earn its 10th consecutive NCAA berth.
Ole Miss has plenty of regional experience on its men's roster as well, including All-American and two-time All-South honoree Cole Bullock in addition to transfers Cruz Gomez and Jack Meijer – who both have previously earned All-Region in the South Central and Great Lakes regionals, respectively.
Sophomore Toby Gillen is coming off his best race as a Rebel at the SEC Championships, where he led the Ole Miss men in 14th place overall at a 15-second 8K PR of 23:28.4.
Other Rebel men on the starting line Friday are junior Aiden Britt, junior Miles Phillips, junior Chase Rose and sophomore Gabe Scales.
The women's 6K is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. CT, with the men's 10K to follow at 8:30 a.m. CT.
