Women’s Track & Field Finishes Program Record Fourth at SEC Indoor Championships
2/25/2023 | Track and Field
No. 15 Rebel Women Tied with No. 6 Alabama for Fourth Place
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Ole Miss women's track & field received a handful of historic performances to push it to a program record fourth place finish, concluding an excellent stay at the SEC Indoor Championships for both Rebel squads on Saturday.
The No. 15 Ole Miss women – led by some of the best performances in collegiate history – tied with No. 6 Alabama for fourth place at 54 points, falling just 2.33 points shy of No. 10 Tennessee in third. No. 2 Arkansas ran away with the women's team title, besting No. 3 Florida 130.5 to 84. The fourth-place finish for Ole Miss tops its previous SEC Indoor record of fifth, which happened in 2017 and 2022 – both under eighth-year head coach Connie Price-Smith. That finish is also an overall program record for the Rebel women, who have a top outdoor finish of fifth in 2018.
One night removed from snagging a gold medal and becoming the No. 5 performer in collegiate history in the weight throw, All-American senior Jalani Davis made world history with her silver medal performance in the shot put on Saturday. Davis unleashed a two-foot PR of 18.43m/60-05.75 in the third round, and combined with her weight throw performance of 24.63m/80-09.75 from last night, Davis is now the first woman in world history to break both 80 feet in the weight throw and 60 feet in the indoor shot put.
Davis held onto that lead until the final throw by Florida's Alida Van Daalen, who took the gold at 18.66m/61-02.75. Heartbreak aside, Davis' prolific weekend was still crucial for the Rebel women. Davis scored 18 of Ole Miss' 54 points by herself, adding to her extraordinary career tally of 60 total SEC points – 41 now at the SEC Indoor meet alone.
Davis now ranks No. 4 in the NCAA, No. 4 in the United States and No. 15 worldwide in the shot put this season at her mark tonight, as well as the No. 14 performer in collegiate history. In the Ole Miss record books, Davis now ranks second behind Olympian Raven Saunders' 19.56m/64-02.25 from 2017 that was the collegiate record up until a few weeks ago.
Senior McKenzie Long topped an already incredible weekend of competition with a spectacular race in the 200-meter dash that ended up as Ole Miss' TV moment of the meet. Long – who broke the Ole Miss record one night earlier at a three-tenth PR of 23.00 – obliterated her own record by three more tenths of a second, exploding off the banked turn and winning the first heat of the final at a jaw-dropping 22.67. That time stood up to scrutiny with the higher-seeded second heat, finishing runner-up to collegiate No. 2 all-time Favour Ofili of LSU (22.52).
Long is now the first Rebel woman to ever break 23 seconds indoors in the 200-meter, and her silver medal performance is the best ever by a Rebel woman in the SEC Indoor 200-meter. She all but locked down a spot at the NCAA Championships, as she now ranks fifth in the nation heading into the first declaration lists.
Long also scored for the Rebels in the women's 60-meter dash final, running 7.23 and finishing fifth overall. In total, she scored 12 points for the Rebels this week in her first career SEC Championship meet.
In the men's 3K final, senior Anthony Camerieri proved as consistent as ever, earning his second silver medal of the meet after another thrilling race against Tennessee's Dylan Jacobs. Both ran 3:54 mile anchor legs on the distance medley relay last night, but Jacobs edged out Camerieri at the line for the DMR victory.
The two were neck-and-neck again in the 3K, and Camerieri had the faster final 400 split of 56.04, but Jacobs had the quicker last lap, a 26.05 final 200 to squeak by Camerieri at the line. The top-three times all broke the SEC meet record, including Camerieri's third straight 7:52 in the 3K, tonight running 7:52.98 for the silver medal.
All-American senior Baylor Franklin earned his first individual SEC medal to go along with his 2020 distance medley relay gold, finishing third today in the men's 800-meter at 1:49.04.
Other Rebels scoring on Day Two were Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan in the men's shot put (fifth, 19.16m/62-10.50), Loral Winn in the women's mile (fifth, 4:40.90), Kristel van den Berg in the women's 3K (sixth, 9:22.65), Dalton Hengst (seventh, 4:05.75) and Shane Bracken (eighth, 4:05.76) in the men's mile, Tiarnan Crorken in the men's 800-meter (eighth, 2:30.48) and Arvesta Troupe in the men's high jump (tied for eighth, 2.05m/6-08.75).
Up next for Ole Miss will be the 2023 NCAA Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Qualifying lists for the national meet will be released in the coming days.
