Long Ran Third-Fastest All-Conditions 200-Meter in Collegiate History
AUSTIN, Texas – McKenzie Long had a long road to this moment. A season-ending hip injury that required surgery. A new school. Newfound success and the pressure that comes with it. When the Ole Miss star senior sprinter crossed the line as the runner-up in the NCAA 200-meter final under the lights in Texas on Saturday night, that journey came full circle as she now stands as one of the best collegiate sprinters of all time.
Long concluded Ole Miss' stay at the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Championships with a stupendous performance in the 200-meter final. She clocked the third-fastest all-conditions time in collegiate history at 21.88 (+2.5) to finish runner-up to Texas' Julien Alfred, who entered as the world leader and won tonight at 21.73.
The tale of the tape on Long's run immediately makes her one of the top sprinters worldwide heading into a busy summer of competition that will feature both the U.S. Championships in Oregon and the World Athletics Championships in Budapest. In addition to being the third-fastest in collegiate history in all conditions, Long ranks No. 13 all-time among American sprinters in all-conditions, and this season ranks No. 1 in the United States and No. 2 in the world behind Alfred among all wind readings.
Long's 200-meter final was put in doubt after a ninth-place finish in the 100-meter dash final less than an hour earlier, as she ran 11.13 (+2.3) while dealing with lingering soreness, but she battled through in the half-lap race to score eight points for the Rebel women.
Long's heroics put Ole Miss into a tie for 25th overall in the women's team standings, the fifth top-25 team finish ever for the Rebel women outdoors – the fourth under eighth-year head coach Connie Price-Smith since 2016.
Saturday night ends a sublime first year with the Rebels for Long, who ends the season as a four-time All-American with 15 NCAA points, three SEC medals, 29.5 SEC points, six school records and a litany of firsts in the history of Ole Miss track & field.
Saturday night also concludes another superb season for the Rebels under Price-Smith, who broke program records for SEC finishes both indoors (tie for fourth) and outdoors (fourth).
