Track & Field Concludes Stay at Razorback Invitational
1/27/2024 | Track and Field
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Ole Miss men's and women's track & field put together another strong day of competition to close out the Razorback Invitational at Arkansas' Randal Tyson Track Center on Saturday.
All-American senior Jalani Davis led the charge for the Rebels with a season-best performance in the women's shot put. Davis – who last year became the first woman in world history to break both 80 feet in the weight throw and 60 feet in the shot put indoors – was the runner-up today at her third-round toss of 18.00m/59-00.75, putting her No. 3 in the NCAA and atop the SEC leaderboard this season.
This is a significant early success for Davis, who has only eclipsed 18 meters in the shot put three times prior and only once indoors – all much later into the season like her SEC Indoor winning heave and indoor PR of 18.43m/60-05.75 from last season. In her field series today, Davis was consistent, breaking at least 57 feet, seven inches on all four of her legal attempts.
So far in 2024, Davis is the lone collegiate thrower beyond both 24 meters in the weight throw and 18 meters in the shot put.
Also recording a notable performance in the women's shot put Saturday was freshman Akaoma Odeluga, who finished seventh on a four-foot PR of 16.10m/52-10 – moving her to No. 7 in Ole Miss history.
In the men's shot put, sophomore Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan came within one centimeter of his indoor school record, finishing fourth today at a season-best 19.72m/64-08.50. That throw puts him No. 4 in both the SEC and NCAA so far this season, and it also makes Robinson-O'Hagan the lone thrower nationally this year to break 75 feet in the weight throw and 64 feet in the shot put.
The Rebel men received two excellent debut performances Saturday from transfers Toby Gillen and Jack Meijer in the invitational section of the 3K. Gillen finished third at a career-best time of 7:53.08, already making him the third-fastest Rebel ever in the 3K. Meijer wasn't far off in seventh place, opening with a 7:58.18 that fell one second shy of his career-best from Wisconsin but already ranks him No. 11 in school history.
In the women's 3K, senior Skylar Boogerd had a career day as well, finishing seventh at a PR of 9:22.83 to move her up to No. 7 on the Rebel all-time list. Additional solid performances from the Ole Miss distance squad included Cruz Gomez (eighth, 4:00.47, No. 14 Ole Miss history) and Gabe Scales (ninth, 4:00.83, PR) in the men's mile, and Marcus Dropik in the men's 800-meter (14th, 1:49.18, PR, No. 10 Ole Miss history).
In the sprints, All-American senior McKenzie Long led the way with an appearance in the 60-meter dash final. Long finished eighth at 7.36 in the final, but set a season-best 7.28 in her debut in the prelim.
Ole Miss men's pole vaulters Logan Kelley and Drew O'Connor both got some strong early-season work in against a stacked field. Kelley finished seventh at a season-best 5.25m/17-02.75, while O'Connor – a transfer from Memphis – tied for ninth place at a season-best 5.10m/16-08.75 that moves him up to No. 9 in school history.
In the men's triple jump, junior Iangelo Atkinstall-Daley put together an impressive day as well, notching an indoor PR of 15.31m/50-02.75 to finish sixth in the final. That jump improves upon his place at No. 15 on the Ole Miss all-time indoor list.
Pierce Genereux finished two grueling days of competition in the men's heptathlon with a handful of top performances. Genereux finished 10th overall at a career-best 4,749 points, improving upon his spot at No. 2 in Ole Miss history in the event. Genereux set PRs in three events across the two days, including two Saturday in the pole vault (4.80m/15-9; No. 15 Ole Miss history) and the 1000-meter (3:01.42).
Ole Miss will take next week off before splitting three ways the weekend of Feb. 9-10, with a Rebel delegation returning to Arkansas for the Tyson Invitational while two other groups set out separately for Vanderbilt's Music City Challenge and Boston University's David Hemery Valentine Invite.
