Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader With Hawaii
2/17/2024 | Baseball
HONOLULU – Ole Miss Baseball played two seven-inning games on Saturday as part of a weekend doubleheader against the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors, winning the first 5-2 but dropping the second 9-1.
Bo Gatlin hit his first home run in a Rebel uniform in the win in game one and would end up 2-for-2 with three RBI and a run scored. Ethan Lege continued his hot start at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a walk in game one.
Gunnar Dennis and Wes Mendes both made their debuts in the opener, as Dennis earned his first win of the season and Mendes locked down his first save.
Gatlin hit his home run in the second inning after walks from Lege and Treyson Hughes put two runners on with two outs. His blast went to straight-away center field and gave Ole Miss a 3-0 lead.
Andrew Fischer hit his first home run as a Rebel in the third inning, a towering solo shot down the right field line to make it 4-0.
Dennis worked around some trouble in each inning that he pitched but allowed just two runs on four hits over four innings. Mendes came on in relief in the fifth with Ole Miss up by three runs, allowing just one baserunner and striking out four. He earned a rare three-inning save in what was his collegiate debut.
The Rebels had just three hits in the game two loss, striking out 11 times and were no hit through the first four innings. They were able to scratch across a run in the fifth on an RBI-single from Reagan Burford.
Hawaii led 5-0 after four innings and really broke things open in the bottom of the fifth on a three-RBI home run from Kyson Donahue.
Tomorrow's series finale is set to begin at 5:05 p.m. CT.
