Track & Field Opens Outdoor Season at Georgia Tech

3/15/2024 | Track and Field

ATLANTA – Ole Miss track & field will quickly turn the page on a successful indoor campaign to the beginning of the 2024 outdoor season at Georgia Tech's Yellow Jacket Invitational this Saturday. Inclement weather forced the meet to be condensed into one day on Saturday as opposed to the original two-day meet that was to run March 15-16.

MEET NOTES

• Both Rebel squads are coming off a historic indoor season that saw both Ole Miss teams finish within the top-15 nationally at the NCAA Indoor Championships last week in Boston. The Rebel women finished an overall combined program record fifth overall at an additional record 30 meet points, their third straight top-10 national finish indoors -- another program record across both genders and either season. The Ole Miss men, meanwhile, finished tied for 15th overall, setting a program-record streak of four straight top-15 team finishes indoors.

• Ole Miss was one of nine schools nationally this year to place both its men's and women's teams within the top-15, and it stands alongside Arkansas as the lone schools to do so in each of the last three indoor seasons dating back to 2022.

• Five of the eight all-time NCAA top-10 track finishes in Ole Miss history have come within the last three years: 2024 women's indoor (5th), 2023 women's indoor (10th), 2022 women's indoor (T-6th), 2022 men's indoor (T-10th), 2021 men's indoor (10th), 2013 men's outdoor (8th), 2001 men's indoor (10th) and 1991 men's indoor (9th).

• Ole Miss came away with two national titles in Boston last week, with senior Jalani Davis successfully defending her crown in the women's weight throw, and sophomore Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan becoming the first Rebel to ever win a men's shot put title -- indoors or outdoors. Davis also finished third in the shot put, and Robinson-O'Hagan was fifth in the weight throw, giving them two First-Team All-America honors each.

• The indoor season was the story of both Davis and Robinson-O'Hagan, who in addition to winning NCAA titles also both earned USTFCCCA South Region Field Athlete of the Year, both were NCAA doublers, both won at least a share of the SEC Cliff Harper Trophy for most conference points scored, and both swept their respective conference titles in the shot put and weight throw.

• Thanks in large part to those four conference titles, Ole Miss finished fifth in both men's and women's competition at the SEC Indoor Championships, just the third time in school history that both teams finished within the top-five in the same season.

• Ole Miss also received an NCAA runner-up finish from McKenzie Long (women's 200-meter dash) and a third-place scoring performance from senior Jasmine Mitchell (women's weight throw) for First-Team All-America honors as well.

• Davis and Mitchell roll right into outdoor this weekend, with Davis set to open in the hammer and Mitchell in the shot put.

• Last outdoor season, Ole Miss recorded its best women's SEC finish ever in fourth place, as well as another top-25 national finish thanks to a historic NCAA runner-up finish from McKenzie Long in the 200-meter dash. Her second-place time of 21.88 (+2.5) ranks third in collegiate history in all-conditions, and she leads a group of six returning All-Americans from the outdoor season. Long was First-Team in the 200-meter (2nd) and Second-Team in the 100-meter (9th), and is joined by fellow NCAA returnees Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan (First-Team, hammer, 8th), Gabrielle Matthews (Second-Team, 4x100-meter relay, 13th), Olivia Womack (Second-Team, 4x100-meter relay, 13th), Ahmad Young Jr. (Honorable Mention, 110-Meter Hurdles, 19th) and Jasmine Mitchell (Honorable Mention, Shot Put, 21st).

• In total from the 2023 outdoor season, Ole Miss returns six First or Second-Team All-Americans, eight NCAA qualifiers, 20 NCAA East Region qualifiers, and three SEC medalists: McKenzie Long (200-meter, gold; 100-meter, bronze), Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan (hammer, gold), Jalani Davis (shot put, silver; hammer, silver).
