Track & Field Wins Seven Events in Outdoor Opener at Georgia Tech
3/16/2024 | Track and Field
ATLANTA – Ole Miss men's and women's track & field came away with a combined seven event titles following a strong opening meet of the outdoor season at Georgia Tech's Yellow Jacket Invitational on Saturday.
Fresh off her successful title defense as the now two-time NCAA Indoor champion in the women's weight throw, senior Jalani Davis set about making her mark on the outdoor season with a solid opening performance in the hammer on Saturday. Davis won at 63.99m/209-11, which currently holds the early-season lead on the women's NCAA charts.
Freshman Skylar Soli had an excellent collegiate hammer debut right behind her in second place, improving on four of her throws to her eventual best of 58.67m/192-06 – already placing her No. 8 in school history.
In the men's hammer, senior Jake Dalton made his Ole Miss debut in a big way. After sitting out the indoor season, Dalton claimed victory in his first meet of the year, setting a new career-best on his winning toss of 65.42m/214-07. That already launches him up into a tie for No. 4 on the all-time list at Ole Miss, and it ranks sixth nationally on the early outdoor leaderboard in the NCAA.
Ole Miss went 1-2-3-4-7 in the men's hammer, with junior Costen Campion putting in a career day of work himself right behind Dalton. Campion unleashed a 12-foot PR of 62.67m/205-07, pushing into No. 7 all-time at Ole Miss.
All-American senior Jasmine Mitchell also snagged a victory for the Rebels in the women's shot put at 16.88m/55-04.75, while Mason Hickel was the top finisher in the men's edition in third place at an outdoor PR 17.19m/56-04.75 (No. 6 Ole Miss history).
The Ole Miss jumpers had a superb opening to the outdoor season on Saturday, winning three event titles and a runner-up finish following several excellent performances.
Sophomore Arvesta Troupe became only the eighth Rebel to ever clear seven feet in the high jump outdoors, winning today at a huge overall career-best height of 2.18m/7-01.75. That bar puts him into a tie for No. 1 in the NCAA at this early point of the outdoor season, and it pushes him up to No. 5 on the Ole Miss all-time list outdoors.
Senior transfer Eni Akinniyi had to sit out the indoor season, and Saturday she came out swinging in her first competition as a Rebel. Akinniyi won the women's triple jump by nearly 1.5 feet at 12.52m/41-1 (+0.1), already pushing her to No. 7 in Ole Miss history after just one meet as a Rebel. Akinniyi had three jumps sail beyond 12 meters, and two beyond 40 feet – all wind-legal below the allowable 2.0 meters per second.
Junior Iangelo Atkinstall-Daley had a productive day back on Saturday as well, winning the men's long jump and finishing as the runner-up in the triple jump just a couple hours later. Atkinstall-Daley took the long jump crown at a wind-legal 7.20m/23-07.50 (+0.7) before finishing as the top collegian in the triple, taking second place into a headwind at 15.36m/50-04.75 (-2.0).
Junior transfer Drew O'Connor built upon a strong indoor season with a victorious open to the outdoor campaign, winning the men's pole vault at 5.22m/17-01.50. That height falls just one centimeter short of his outdoor PR, and it already ranks him No. 7 in Ole Miss history outdoors.
The Ole Miss javelin throwers were also ready to put on a show in their first action of the season on Saturday. In the men's competition, redshirt freshman Jake Railey became just the fourth Rebel to ever throw 200 feet, topping out at 63.50m/208-04 in his first attached meet at Ole Miss (No. 4 school history.)
Luke Etherton had an excellent day of work in the men's javelin as well, finishing right behind Railey in fourth place at an eight-foot PR of 57.08m/187-03 – putting him into a tie for sixth in Ole Miss history.
In the women's javelin, junior Abigail Green finished sixth, exploding for a five-foot PR and a seven-foot Ole Miss best of 44.74m/146-09. That throw moves her from No. 8 to No. 3 all-time in school history.
Both Rebel squads now return home to host the annual Ole Miss Classic, which runs March 22-23 at the Ole Miss Track & Field Complex.
