National Lead, Two Event Wins Highlight Day One of Ole Miss Classic

3/22/2024 | Track and Field

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss track & field opened its first home meet of the season in excellent fashion, receiving a national lead in the men's hammer and two event wins at the first day of the 2024 Ole Miss Classic on Friday.

Despite rainy conditions, sophomore Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan wasted no time in establishing himself atop both the U.S. and the NCAA early-season leaderboards in the men's hammer in his 2024 outdoor debut. Just two weeks removed from an NCAA title indoors in the shot put, Robinson-O'Hagan took down his own school record in the hammer Friday, topping out in the fifth round at 72.42m/237-07. That mark blows by his previous school record of 71.38m/234-02 from the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Championships, and his third-round effort of 71.74m/235-04 also briefly stood as a new Ole Miss record.

Senior transfer Jake Dalton improved for the second week in a row, finishing fourth at a new PR 65.47m/214-09. That throw gives him sole possession of fourth all-time at Ole Miss after tying for fourth in his Rebel debut last week, and this season it ranks him No. 11 in the NCAA as well as No. 3 in both the East Region and the SEC.

Also making the hammer final were redshirt sophomore Mason Hickel in fifth place on a 10-foot PR of 61.95m/203-03 (No. 9 Ole Miss history), and junior Costen Campion in seventh at 61.56m/202-00.

In the women's hammer, All-American senior (and reigning SEC Women's Field Athlete of the Week) Jasmine Mitchell was the top collegiate finisher in what turned out to be the top women's hammer competition in the United States so far this outdoor season. Each of the top four finishers charted the top four throws by American athletes at this early juncture of 2024, with professionals Erin Reese (71.21m/233-07) and Janeah Stewart (69.75m/228-10) taking the top two spots.

Mitchell finished third at 68.08m/223-04, which this season ranks No. 3 in the United States, No. 2 in the NCAA and it leads both the East Region and the SEC. Fellow senior and two-time NCAA Indoor champion Jalani Davis was fourth, tossing a season-best 65.73m/215-08 that puts her right behind Mitchell in all four of those same categories.

Freshman Skylar Soli made the final for the second week in a row, finishing ninth at 56.93m/186-09.

Redshirt freshman Jake Railey put together his second strong outing in the men's javelin in as many weeks, winning today on a new career-best 65.08m/213-06. Railey, who missed all of the 2023 season, improved upon his spot at No. 4 in Ole Miss history.

In the women's javelin, junior Abigail Green was the runner-up by an agonizing margin, falling just one centimeter shy of the win at 44.29m/145-04.

Other Rebel field athletes with notable performances on Friday included junior Iangelo Atkinstall-Daley in the men's long jump (fifth, 7.05m/23-01.75, +0.7) and sophomore Laurel Fulcher in the women's long jump (ninth, 5.44m/17-10.25, +0.4, PR).

Ole Miss was also featured in two of the four running events held in cool and damp conditions Friday night. Rebels ran across both editions of the 200-meter dash, with top-10 finishes coming courtesy of Tristyn Wooley in the men's (seventh, 21.65/+2.9) and Akilah Lewis in the women's (eighth, 24.76/+3.4).

Action at the 2024 Ole Miss Classic will resume Saturday morning with the women's high jump, women's discus and women's pole vault beginning at 11 a.m. CT.
