Track & Field Wins Seven Events, Sets More National Leads to Conclude Ole Miss Classic

3/23/2024 | Track and Field

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss track & field wrapped up a successful first home meet with seven additional event victories and two more national leads at the conclusion of the 2024 Ole Miss Classic on Saturday.

Just 24 hours removed from a career day in the hammer, sophomore Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan continued to set the tone early this outdoor season with a record-breaking day in the shot put. Robinson-O'Hagan's field series was consistent, with all five of his first throws beyond 63-8, before exploding in the final round for an outdoor career-best and a facility record 20.69m/67-10.75.

That throw blasted past his previous outdoor record of 20.07m/65-10.25, and it took down the previous Ole Miss Track & Field Complex record of 20.28m/66-06.50 set by Tennessee's Jordan West at the 2022 SEC Outdoor Championships. This season, that throw ranks Robinson-O'Hagan No. 1 on both the U.S. and NCAA outdoor lists.

After breaking 20 meters once in his first season as a Rebel, Robinson-O'Hagan has now thrown past the 20-meter plateau six times in the last month after doing so once at the SEC Indoor Championships (20.38m/66-10.50) and four times at the NCAA Indoor Championships – topped by his title-winning heave of 21.05m/69-00.75.

Mason Hickel also tossed a PR, finishing sixth at 17.30m/56-09.25 to improve upon his spot at No. 6 in Ole Miss history.

Two-time national champion and senior Jalani Davis capped off an excellent weekend of work with two runner-up and top collegian finishes across the shot put and discus. Davis ended the day with a strong outdoor debut in the shot put, finishing as the top collegian behind professional Jessica Ramsey (18.09m/59-04.25) at an NCAA-leading 17.23m/56-06.50.

Earlier in the day, Davis was also the top collegiate finisher in the discus at her runner-up debut of 52.91m/173-07.

Ole Miss had three others make the women's shot put final: senior Jasmine Mitchell in third (16.82m/55-02.25), freshman Akaoma Odeluga in fifth (16.27m/53-04.50, PR, No. 8 Ole Miss history) and freshman Mensi Stiff in sixth (15.89m/52-01.75 (No. 9 Ole Miss history). Stiff also posted a high finish in her Rebel debut in the discus, finishing fourth at 48.84m/160-03 to rank No. 9 in Ole Miss history.

Senior Kyla McLaurin notched the other field win for the Rebels on Saturday, taking the women's triple jump title at a season-best 12.21m/40-00.75 (+2.0).

The other five wins for Ole Miss on Saturday came on the track, with three in the middle distance events and two in the hurdles.

Senior Ahmad Young Jr. won the 110-meter hurdles in his return to action, clocking in at a solid debut of 13.86 (+1.3). Young did not have indoor eligibility, but was granted an additional outdoor season for 2024.

Sophomore Gabrielle Matthews won her 400-meter hurdles debut for the 2024 outdoor season, finishing at 1:00.46. Matthews set the Ole Miss record and was an NCAA East Region qualifier as a freshman in 2023.

Ole Miss opened the track action on Saturday by sweeping the 1500-meter races, with Evan Thornton-Sherman winning his Ole Miss debut at career-best 3:48.21. Cole Piotrowski was the runner-up at a PR of his own, running 3:53.52.

In the women's race, sophomore Sophie Baumann was the winner at 4:27.76, and led a 1-2-3 Rebel finish ahead of runner-up Beth Arentz (4:29.30) and third-place Sarah Schiffmann (4:32.88).

Chase Rose had a career-day in the men's 800-meter, running an outdoor PR 1:49.84 to claim victory. Landen McNair (third, 1:51.83) and Aidan Hodge (fourth, 1:52.18) also clocked career-best times.

Ole Miss will now split squad for next week, with a delegation of long-distance runners heading west to the Stanford Invitational, and the remainder of the Rebel squad traveling to LSU for the Battle on the Bayou.
