Softball Dominates No. 2 LSU; Earns Highest Ranked Series Win in Program History
3/19/2024 | Softball
BATON ROUGE, La. – Red hot after evening the series with No. 2 LSU and handing the Tigers their first loss of the season, Ole Miss shocked the softball world again, taking the series with a dominant 9-2 win Monday night at Tiger Park.
With the victory, Ole Miss secured up its 20th win of the season in style, dominating the rubber match with No. 2 LSU and grabbing its highest-ranked series win in program history. It also marked the Rebels' first series win over the Tigers in Baton Rouge since 2008 and was the most runs Ole Miss has scored in a three-game set against LSU in the program's history.
The Rebels (20-8, 3-3 SEC) racked up 13 hits on offense, their most in SEC play this season. Starting pitcher Aynslie Furbush led the way, going 3-for-4 and finishing a triple shy of the cycle. Jaden Pone, Paige Smith, Delaney Rummell and Ryan Starr all also tallied multiple hits in the win. Furbush went 3.1 innings, only surrendering one earned run to one of the top offenses in the country. She passed the ball off to teammate Makenna Kliethermes, who retired 11 of the 12 batters she faced to pick up her 10th win of the season.
Ole Miss and LSU threatened in the opening inning, but both starting pitchers recorded big swinging strikeouts to strand runners on base and keep the game scoreless.
The bottom of the order ignited a two-out rally in the second, leading to three runs for the Rebels. Angelina DeLeon and Starr poked back-to-back singles through the infield to turn the lineup over to Lassiter. Hitting in the leadoff spot, the sophomore continued her hot weekend with an RBI single back up the middle to plate the first run of the game. The lefty Pone followed, slapping a ball over the third baseman and into left field to empty the bases and give Ole Miss an early 3-0 lead.
Furbush added a run to the lead in the top of the third, launching a solo home run over the wall in left-center to make it 4-0 Ole Miss and nine unanswered runs scored since Sunday.
LSU got one back in the bottom of the third on a solo blast of its own, but Furbush minimized the damage. The Tigers chipped away and got another run back the following inning, taking advantage of a miscue to pull within two runs at 4-2. Kliethermes entered the game with a runner on third and retired the next two batters to stall the LSU threat.
Ole Miss broke the game open in the fifth, doubling its lead. Rummell ripped a double in the gap to lead off the inning, and a base hit from Furbush and hit batter loaded the bases with one out. Annie Orman got the pinch-hit nod and drove in a run on a ball up the middle that was stopped by the diving LSU shortstop, who touched second for a force out.
Lassiter worked her third walk of the night to reload the bases and keep the rally alive. With two outs, Pone singled through the middle to drive in her season-best third run of the game and force a pitching change. The Tigers turned to their ace out of the bullpen with the bases still loaded. Hungry for more, Smith smoked a single to left, and the Rebels continued to pour it on as Starr and Lassiter scored to make it 8-2.
Looking to put the game away for good, Ole Miss had an opportunity to run-rule LSU in the sixth. Lexie Brady reached for the third time in the game on a hit by pitch and moved into scoring position on a base hit by Rummell. A batter later, Furbush laced an RBI double down the line to score one, but the Tigers' relay throw caught the second runner at the plate to keep the Rebels from reaching double digits.
Kliethermes continued to cruise into the seventh inning, surrendering her only hit of the night, a two-out single in the sixth. The senior induced three groundouts in the bottom of the seventh to close out the game and help Ole Miss take down No. 2 LSU 9-2 and win the series in Baton Rouge.
The Rebels return home from a successful 4-1 spring break to host No. 5 Georgia March 22-24.
