Softball Splits Midweek Doubleheader with UT Martin

4/3/2024 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss softball snapped a seven-game skid on Wednesday night, splitting a midweek doubleheader with UT Martin at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.

GAME ONE | Ole Miss 1, UT Martin 4
A pair of errors in the first inning proved costly as the Rebels couldn't overcome a three-run deficit, falling to UT Martin in the first game of the afternoon.

The Skyhawks capitalized on two miscues to plate three unearned runs in the opening frame. Ole Miss quickly turned to Grace Sparks out of the bullpen, who made her first start after missing a month of action due to injury. She tossed 5.2 strong innings, allowing only one run on four hits while striking out eight.

Ole Miss rallied in the fifth but could only scrape across one run. After a leadoff walk to Angelina DeLeon, Jaden Pone poked a double over the third baseman's glove to put a pair in scoring position with one out. Jalia Lassiter drove in the Rebels' first run of the contest with a sacrifice fly to center field, but then the offense stalled, leaving the tying runs on base.

UT Martin tacked on an insurance run in the sixth with an RBI double to make it 4-1. The Skyhawks held strong defensively in the bottom half of the inning to strand a pair in scoring position and went on to close out the victory.

GAME TWO | Ole Miss 4, UT Martin 2
After falling to UT Martin in game one, Ole Miss responded with a 4-2 victory to split the doubleheader. Angelina DeLeon's two-run single in the bottom of the fifth and a strong outing from Catelyn Riley were the difference for the Rebels.

Ole Miss jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Paige Smith smashed a double in the gap and came in to score on an RBI single by Aynslie Furbush. UT Martin, however, punched back in the second, scratching across two runs on two hits to go up 2-1 on the Rebels.

Looking to tie things back up, Lexie Brady stepped to the plate in the bottom of the third. The Ole Miss slugger changed the game with just one swing, blasting her 11th home run of the season over the wall in right center to even the score.

In the fifth inning, the Rebels rallied again. An Annie Orman single and two walks helped load the bases with two outs for DeLeon. The junior delivered her first hit of the night, turning on the second pitch of the at-bat for a two-run single and scoring the go-ahead runs.

Riley locked in for the final six outs to pick up her fourth win of the season and help Ole Miss snap a seven-game skid.

The Rebels continue SEC play on the road at No. 14 Alabama April 5-7
