Track & Field Wins Thrilling SEC 5K, Finish Fifth in Men’s Team Standings
5/17/2025 | Track and Field
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Ole Miss track & field wrapped up an excellent week of competition with three more medals, including an improbable comeback victory from All-American senior Toby Gillen in the men's 5K, to conclude the Rebels' stay at the 2025 SEC Outdoor Championships on Saturday.
The Rebel men finished fifth with 74 meet points, their best finish outdoors since 2016 (fifth) with their most points scored outdoors since 2014 (78). This marks only the fourth top-five SEC finish outdoors for the Ole Miss men since 1980, the second under 10th-year head coach Connie Price-Smith.
Ole Miss found scoring in both expected and unexpected ways, breaking the formchart all weekend long. But perhaps no Rebel athlete exemplified that attitude more than Gillen, who caught the attention of the track world following two dramatic and brilliant races over the last three days.
Two nights ago, Gillen went toe-to-toe with one of the best 10K runners in SEC history – Alabama's Victor Kiprop – leading with less than 100 meters to go before Kiprop's furious final dash pushed Gillen into silver medal status.
On Saturday night, however, Gillen would not be denied the 5K crown, crossing the line in 13:49.75 for the conference title while edging out a top-five that all finished within two seconds of each other.
Gillen looked strong considering his superb effort just 48 hours earlier, running near the front of the pack with confidence all race long in a 5K final on Saturday that was filled with collisions. But it was at the bell where Gillen turned on the jets, crossing the line as the champion following a 58.18 final 400.
Gillen's victory is the fourth by a Rebel men's runner all-time in the 5K outdoors, the first since MJ Erb in 2017. Gillen concludes his Ole Miss career with 32 SEC points scored – 18 alone at this meet.
"I just had to go back and think about my (10K), I probably played it 50 million times, Thursday night all the way through to today," Gillen told SEC Network's John Anderson postrace. "I said I was going to sit pretty, wait for the last two laps to go, avoid any carnage – which I didn't realize (happened) and there's blood everywhere."
Gillen is alluding to a massive collison not far past the first kilometer that took out several runners, but Gillen and fellow scorer Kidus Misgina were able to avoid the worst of it, with Misgina adding three points of his own to the Rebel total in sixth place at 13:53.27.
In the men's high jump, All-American junior Arvesta Troupe won his third career SEC medal and his second consecutive silver medal in the high jump after a dramatic fight for the crown with the national leader.
Troupe was sublime on Saturday, clearing each of his first five bars clean on his first attempts before a second-attempt PR 2.26m/7-5 to put him square in a jump-off with the NCAA's top-ranked high jumper, Georgia's Riyon Rankin. With the bar up to 2.29m/7-6, both athletes were down to their third and final tries. Troupe wasn't able to get a jump off, while Rankin cleared for the walk-off win.
This was the second consecutive SEC high jump final for Troupe that came down to the final attempts between him and one other competitor, a mirror-image of his indoor silver medal finish back in February.
Troupe is in the midst of a career season, increasing his prior year personal best by more than four inches – with his latest improvement tonight ranking him second in school history behind Olympian Ricky Robertson. Additionally, Troupe currently ranks second in the NCAA behind Rankin as well as fifth in the United States and 23rd worldwide for the 2025 season.
For the Ole Miss women, freshman Lily Beattie put together the best performance of her young career, taking the silver medal following an excellent women's pole vault competition.
Beattie found herself as one of only eight left in competition at the third bar (4.26m/13-11.75) and one of only four left at the next one (4.36m/14-03.50), soaring clear over her first three bars – including a monster half-foot PR at her final one of 4.26m/13-11.75.
That height already makes her the third-best in Ole Miss history, and her silver medal performance today ranks as the best ever by a Rebel woman in the pole vault at any SEC meet – indoor or outdoor.
The Rebel men received a handful of other crucial scoring outputs on the track. Junior Evan Thornton-Sherman took fifth in a tight men's 1500-meter final, crossing the line in 3:53.00 for four Ole Miss points.
The men's 4x100-meter relay of senior Iangelo Atkinstall-Daley, freshman Jordan Urrutia, freshman Wesley Todd and junior Joseph Michel put together the second-best performance in school history and snagged a point in eighth place, passing the stick in 39.38. That time only trails a 39.34 from the 2014 Rebels.
To close the night, the Rebel 4x400-meter relay unit had their own run at the history books, clocking the seventh-best relay in program history – the fastest at Ole Miss since 1999. The foursome of Urrutia, Todd, and juniors Carson Turner and Cade Flatt blazed to a time of 3:06.25.
Up next, Rebel athletes who are qualified and declared will travel to the University of North Florida for the NCAA East Regional, held May 28-31 in Jacksonville, Florida.
