Cross Country Set for Early Test at Missouri’s Gans Creek Classic
9/25/2025 | Cross Country
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Ole Miss men's and women's cross country faces an early-season test at the 2025 Gans Creek Classic, hosted by Missouri this Friday morning.
All told, 30 total ranked squads will be in attendance at Mizzou's Gans Creek Cross Country course – 11 on the women's side and 19 on the men's, including the No. 25 Rebel men.
This is the first competition for both Ole Miss teams in nearly one month since their season-openers at the Memphis Twilight back on Aug. 30. The Rebel men came away with a 13-point victory over Middle Tennessee, while the Rebel women were narrowly the runners-up to Mississippi State by a two-point margin.
In Columbia this week, it will be the Ole Miss women who are first on the line in the Gold Invitational 6K at 9 a.m. CT. All eight Rebel women who ran the 5K in Memphis last month – including top finisher and freshman Leah Penick (fifth, 17:21.70) – will be in competition Friday morning, while making their season debuts are NCAA All-South Region senior Sophie Baumann and fellow senior Beth Arentz.
Other Rebel women on the startline Friday will be redshirt freshman Madison Archdale, redshirt sophomore Hannah Doyle, freshman Natalie Duggan, redshirt sophomore Ella Johnson, junior Adie Luna, freshman Addy Mitchell and junior Brooke Preputnick.
The 25th-ranked Ole Miss men face a crucial test come national qualifying selection in November, as it will have an excellent opportunity to stack some ranked wins against 18 other national top-30 squads in the Gold Invitational 8K at 9:45 a.m. CT.
In Memphis last month, redshirt sophomore Zack Gilbertson led the way in fifth place of the four-mile race at 19:18.57, and was followed in the top-10 by senior Gabe Scales (sixth, 19:20.19), junior Landen McNair (seventh, 19:24.07) and redshirt freshman Ky Hehir (eighth, 19:25.99). All four are set to run for the Rebels again this Friday, as are sophomores Aidan Hodge and sophomore Stone Smith, who finished 13th and 17th in Memphis, respectively.
The story for the Ole Miss men this week, though, will be several anticipated season debuts.
All-SEC and All-Region senior Toby Gillen kicks off his final season of college eligibility Friday morning, fresh off a superb All-American track career for Ole Miss and off an unattached 5K of 13:16.71 in Belgium last month before returning to Oxford for the fall semester.
Redshirt junior Kidus Misgina makes his long-awaited Ole Miss cross country debut this week. Misgina joined the Rebel track squad in January as a mid-year enrollee and made an immediate impact, scoring 10 SEC points, shattering the 10K school record at 28:20.19 and earning a national qualifying berth outdoors in the 5K alongside Gillen.
Redshirt sophomore Lukas Ehrle will run his first race as a Rebel on Friday since transferring to Ole Miss mid-year in January as well. Ehrle came to Ole Miss from Wingate, where he was the 15th-place finisher at the NCAA Division II national meet in 2024 – helping push Wingate to a national runner-up team finish.
Also opening their season this week is All-SEC senior Evan Thornton-Sherman, who was a key member of Ole Miss' third-place SEC squad last fall as the 15th-place individual finisher.
Competition opens at 8:15 a.m. CT, with the Rebels slated to run in races at 9 a.m. CT (Women's Gold Invitational 6K) and 9:45 a.m. CT (Men's Gold Invitational 8K). Fans can watch a live stream on SECN+ and catch the live results on PTTiming.com.
