TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Jonathan Swearingen's two-run, pinch-hit single up the middle over a drawn-in infield broke a 1-1 tie and keyed a five-run seventh inning as No. 9 Ole Miss defeated No. 2 Alabama 5-2 in the rubber-match of this weekend's three-game Southeastern Conference series, Sunday afternoon in front of 5,772 at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.

With the win, the Rebels (32-9, 12-6 SEC) won their fifth straight SEC series since being swept at Florida on the conference's opening weekend of play, March 15-17. Ole Miss also moved to within a game of Alabama (34-7, 13-5) for first place in the SEC Western Division.

Trailing 1-0, Drew Rogers and Chad Sterbens opened the seventh with back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners. Dustin Cliburn then came on to pinch-hit for Bryce Morrison and doubled to left center off Taylor Tankersley, scoring Rogers to make it 1-1.

Swearingen followed by chopping an 0-1 pitch from reliever Brian Reed over the shortstop to plate two runs and give the Rebels a 3-1 lead. Ole Miss would add two more runs in the inning on Clint Farrar's sac fly to left to score Jon Reeder, and on Seth Smith's grounder to score Swearingen.

Freshman right-hander Alan Horne (3-1) pitched 6 1/3 innings to earn the win. He allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits and four walks, and struck out two.

T.J.Beam worked a perfect ninth inning to earn his fifth save of the year.

Sterbens and Swearingen both recorded two hits each to lead Ole Miss at the plate.

Peter Stonard was 3-for-5 for the Crimson Tide.

Both teams had seven hits each on the afternoon.

Tankersley (6-3) was charged with the loss, allowing four runs on four hits and one walk in three innings of relief for starter Shane Sanders, who left the game in the fourth after straining his throwing arm when he tried to field a ground ball back up the middle.

Sanders allowed one hit and struck out two in three scoreless innings of work.

Ole Miss will return to action Tuesday evening when the Rebels host UT-Martin at 6:30 p.m., at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. Ole Miss will host Tennessee next weekend in a three-game SEC series, beginning Friday at 6:30 p.m., at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
