NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Ryan Klosterman hit a one-out double off the left-field wall to score pinch-runner Gil Kim from second and lift the Vanderbilt Commodores to a 2-1 win over the Ole Miss Rebels Friday night in the first game of a three-game Southeastern Conference series at Hawkins Field.
The win improved the Commodores (13-8, 2-2 SEC) to 8-2 in one-run games this season. The loss snapped the Rebels' four-game win streak and dropped Ole Miss (13-7, 3-1 SEC) to 2-5 in one-run games.
Freshman right-hander Jensen Lewis pitched four scoreless innings of relief for starter Robert Ransom to earn the win. Lewis (2-3) allowed two hits and struck out three.
Junior right-hander Jeremy Zick (1-2) was charged with the loss. He allowed one run on one hit and struck out two in two innings of relief for starter Mark Holliman.
Zick hit Jonathan Douillard with a pitch to start the 11th and Douillard then moved to second on Rucker Taylor's ground out back to the pitcher. Klosterman followed and lined Zick's 1-2 pitch off the left-field wall to drive in the winning run.
Holliman carried a no-hitter into the seventh before allowing a lead-off single to Cesar Nicholas. An error by first baseman Stephen Head allowed Nicholas to advance to third and Warner Jones' sac fly to center tied the game at 1-1.
Holliman finished allowing the one unearned run on two hits and four walks and also struck out two in 8 1/3 innings.
Ransom limited the Rebels to one run on three hits and three walks and struck out seven over seven innings.
The two teams combined for just eight hits on the night, with Ole Miss holding a 5-3 advantage.
Seth Smith and Head both went 2-for-5 and Chad Sterbens was 1-for-5 with an RBI single in the third to give Ole Miss a 1-0 lead.
The two teams will continue their three-game series Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m., at Hawkins Field. Senior right-hander T.J. Beam (2-0, 2.10 ERA) is scheduled to start for Ole Miss against Vanderbilt sophomore left-hander Jeremy Sowers (0-2, 2.97 ERA).
