Tigers Claw Rebels 12-4 To Claim Weekend Series

AUBURN, Ala. - Karl Amonite went 3-for-4 with four runs scored and Ben Sprague went 2-for-4 with three RBI to lead Auburn past No. 18 (Sports Weekly/ESPN) Ole Miss 12-4, and clinching this weekend's three-game Southeastern Conference series Saturday evening, in front of 3,090 at Samford Stadium-Hitchcock Field at Plainsman Park.
Auburn scored three runs in the second to take a 3-2 lead. Sprague's two-run double to score Amonite and Josh Donaldson tied the game at 2-2, and Sprague scored a batter later on Adam Stacey's RBI single.
Jeff Boutwell hit a two-run double in the third, scoring Josh Bell and Amonite, to extend the lead to 5-2, and Auburn added two more runs in the fifth to make it 7-2.
After the Rebels cut the lead to 7-4, the Tigers iced the game with a five-run seventh, capped by a three-run double by Tyler Johnstone to make it 12-4.
Junior right-hander Josh Sullivan (7-4) worked six innings to earn the win. He was charged with four runs, two earned, on eight hits and two walks and struck out three.
Junior left-hander Matt Maloney (5-2) was charged with the loss, allowing seven runs on 10 hits and one walk, while striking out four.
Bell also had three hits for the Tigers as Auburn out-hit Ole Miss 15-8 on the evening.
Brian Pettway went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI, and Chris Coghlan went 2-for-3 to lead the Rebels at the plate. Pettway hit his 15th home run of the year with a solo shot in the first to give the Rebels a 2-0 lead.
Mark Wright also homered for Ole Miss, hitting his 12th of the season with a solo shot in the sixth to cut the Tigers' lead to 7-3.
The Rebels will look to salvage the final game of the series when the two teams meet Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Junior left-hander Eric Fowler (3-2, 3.52 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Rebels. The Tigers have yet to announce a starter.
